Whether you've already registered to attend IPO's Annual Meeting or you're still deciding, here are some tips to get the most out of attending a conference. Preparation. Define what you want to achieve from attending the conference. Ask yourself: What do I want to learn? Who do I want to meet? What workshops do I want to attend? What products or services do I want to see? Review. No one wants FOMO (fear of missing out). Review the program in advance and create a personalized schedule that includes sessions, workshops, and networking opportunities that align with your objectives above. Networking. Networking is one of the most important things as a professional and IPO has a lot of opportunities to network! Know how to make a clear and concise introduction. Plan conversation topics ahead of time. Hype yourself up before the event - this one may sound silly, but positive self-talk has a huge impact on self-confidence. Download the Meeting App. IPO's Meeting App contains the program, speaker information, materials, attendee list and more! Build your personal schedule by selecting sessions and events you want to attend or network with your peers. The IPO Annual Meeting takes place at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago, IL from September 22-24. If you haven't registered for the IPO Annual Meeting, don't wait - registration fees increase on September 21st! Register online at www.ipo.org/am2024

Some advice on a superstitious day: Don't break a mirror, don't open an umbrella indoors, and don't ever go in a stranger's house. Unless it's IPO's Committee Open House! Did you know IPO has 28 active committees working on the most important areas of IP law and practice? Committees prepare reports and develop recommendations for the IPO Board of Directors on current IP law, policy, and business issues. Committees will host in-person business meetings on Sunday, September 23 for registered attendees of IPO’s Annual Meeting. You do not have to be a member of the committee to attend the business meetings. Visit www.ipo.org/am2024 for more information and to register for the Annual Meeting. Join the IP Chat Channel™ on Wednesday, August 21 at 2:00pm ET for a webinar as we approach the one-year anniversary of the Federal Circuit’s landmark opinion in In re Cellect. This webinar will provide an in-depth review of the decision, analyzing the arguments from both sides and its broader implications on patent prosecution strategies. Our panel of experts Paul Berghoff (McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP), Gary J. Gershik (Amster Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP) and Jennifer Richie (Leydig, Voit & Mayer, Ltd.) will delve into the challenges posed by obviousness-type double patenting (ODP), including how these challenges affect jointly owned assets. The discussion will highlight practical strategies for mitigating ODP risks through careful patent portfolio management. The panel will also explore the recent Federal Circuit decision in Allergan USA v. MSN Labs, issued on August 13, 2024, which appears to narrow the impact of Cellect, offering fresh perspectives on how this ruling may influence the evolving legal landscape of ODP. This timely discussion will equip attendees with valuable insights for navigating these ongoing challenges in patent law. Register at webinars.ipo.org | CLE credit offered in most states.

IPO's IP Chat Channel will host a webinar on Thursday, August 15th titled "UK Perspectives of the Unified Patent Court (UPC)." Patent litigation in Europe has undergone a dramatic change with the advent of the UPC. Currently around 25% of granted European patents are resulting in a Unitary Patent and there are over 100 Unitary Patents being litigated at the UPC. Injunctions (including preliminary injunctions), damages, and costs are available within rapid timescales, with first instance decisions and appeals within 12 to 15 months. Eighty-five percent of UPC representatives are patent attorneys and the United Kingdom has over 1,000 registered UPC representatives – the second largest number in Europe. Many of them represent U.S. clients before the UPC. This panel will include UK patent attorneys from four firms who have first-hand experience of UPC litigation who can provide insight into the opportunities offered by Europe’s new litigation regime. Speakers include Simon Curtis (Potter Clarkson), Laura Ramsay (Dehns), Pamela Tuxworth (J A Kemp), and Daniel Wise (Carpmaels & Ransford). Register now at webinars.ipo.org. CLE applied for in most states. #patents #intellectualproperty #unifiedpatentcourt
