In early August, we reported from the #EmergingTechETI conference in D.C. that the adoption of IPC-backed language in the FY25 defense bills was viewed as a positive signal for keeping United States Department of Defense investments in the defense electronics industrial base on track, and that additional investments would be coming soon. Now today, here’s great news from the DOD that $30 million is awarded to TTM Technologies to invest in advanced manufacturing of printed circuit boards at the company’s Centers of Excellence across the United States, with eventual integration in its new Syracuse, NY facility. Congratulations to TTM, and bravo to the Manufacturing Capability Expansion and Investment Prioritization (MCEIP) directorate within the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy (ASD(IBP)) for their relentless push to close the gaps in the defense supply chain. Thanks to MCEIP’s efforts to make use of all the resources Congress appropriated, there have been 70 awards for defense industrial base projects in FY24, totaling $672 million. HOWEVER: Additional defense PCB projects will be on the chopping block in FY25 unless funding is restored in the final FY25 defense appropriations bill. Add your voice to IPC’s call for House appropriators to make sure this isn’t the last investment in domestic PCB manufacturing. Which sectors of the U.S. #manufacturing industry are thriving? John W Mitchell, IPC president and CEO, talked to NPR’s Marketplace about positive news in #electronics.

The U.S. manufacturing sector may be facing challenges, but there are bright spots that are too important to overlook—especially in #electronicsmanufacturing. While overall demand has been slow, and manufacturing has contracted in 21 of the past 22 months, specific sectors like aerospace and defense are thriving. I recently discussed this topic with Marketplace by APM and mentioned that a lot of U.S. manufacturing, especially in the electronics area, is in aerospace and defense. We’re not keeping up with the needs in this sector, and a growing backlog is taking place. This backlog, driven by high demand for advanced technologies like #AI and defense systems, reflects resilience in parts of the industry that continue to innovate and grow. It’s clear that while some sectors are still recovering, others are pushing forward and keeping the industry moving. The manufacturing landscape is evolving, and I believe we’re seeing areas of opportunity that are too significant to ignore.
