Knowing that quantum computing is a vital initiative for the state of Maryland, today, IonQ's President & CEO Peter Chapman and CRO Rima Alameddine, SVP, Product Ariel Braunstein and VP, Customer Success Anuja Kochar Singh hosted Congressman Glenn Ivey and our University of Maryland partners Greg Ball and John Sawyer at the company’s College Park, MD headquarters. The group discussed how public and private sectors are demonstrating in Maryland, the Capitol of Quantum, as well as the U.S. our international leadership in the global quantum economy. The group also was provided with a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the world’s most powerful trapped ion quantum computers are designed and created.

Congratulations to IonQ research engineer Luning Zhao who recently published a novel and efficient quantum algorithm that significantly enhances the accuracy of the electron-pair approximated variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) method for chemistry simulations. When used to simulate chemical reactions on IonQ's Aria and Forte quantum computers, Luning and the research team observed that it had reduced VQE error by up to 90%. The predicted reaction energies on the quantum computers are in excellent agreement with noise-free simulators after applying simple error mitigations based on post-selections. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s UK Quantum Hackathon and to the National Quantum Computing Centre (NQCC) for organizing the event! A special congratulations to the winning teams that selected to use IonQ’s QPUs and Classiq’s software as the preferred pairing among several other quantum systems, when developing solutions for novel quantum applications. The UK Quantum Hackathon is the NQCC’s flagship annual event, delivered as part of their user engagement program, SparQ. From students to early career researchers, the event brought together teams of aspiring coders with industry mentors to tackle practical challenges and develop solutions using quantum computing. During the three-day event, 13 teams, including over 70 coders, displayed innovative spirit and creativity. The winning teams presented quantum application use cases for areas like risk aggregation, evaluation for insurance losses, network design, and National Health Service (NHS) forecasting. Each team’s approach was evaluated for scalability and how each application could address challenges in healthcare, energy, and engineering. Incredible team effort and results all around! IonQ has unveiled a novel, efficient approach to quantum error correction that could fill the gap between today's quantum error mitigation techniques and the longer-term promise of fully error-corrected, fault-tolerant quantum computers. IonQ’s new method, called CliNR (pronounced ‘cleaner’ and short for Clifford Noise Reduction), is a low-overhead, scalable approach that can improve performance for the noisiest subset of quantum gates on today’s quantum computers.
