North America's strongest union.

About us

The Teamsters are one of North America’s largest, most diverse unions. In 1903, the Teamsters started as a merger of the two leading team driver associations. These drivers were the backbone of America’s robust economic growth, but they needed to organize to wrest their fair share from greedy corporations. Today, the Union’s task is exactly the same. The Teamsters are known as the champion of freight drivers and warehouse workers, but have organized workers in virtually every occupation imaginable, both professional and non-professional, private sector and public sector. Our 1.2 million members are public defenders in Minnesota; vegetable workers in California; sanitation workers in New York; brewers in St. Louis; newspaper workers in Seattle; construction workers in Las Vegas; zoo keepers in Pennsylvania; healthcare workers in Rhode Island; bakery workers in Maine; airline pilots, secretaries and police officers. Name the occupation and chances are we represent those workers somewhere. Teamsters stand ready to organize workers who want to bargain collectively. Once a contract is negotiated and signed, the Union works to enforce it—holding management’s feet to the fire and invoking contract grievance procedures if management chooses not to. Wages and benefits under Teamster contracts are markedly better than those of non-union employees in similar jobs. Teamster contracts are the guarantors of decent wages, fair promotion, health coverage, job security, paid time-off and retirement income. The Teamsters Union also performs vital tasks in such areas as pension management, safety & health, community outreach, governmental affairs and communications. For more than a century, the Teamsters have been a public voice for the rights and aspirations of working men and women and a key player in securing them.

  • VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS TO ATTEND TEAMSTERS RANK-AND-FILE ROUNDTABLE The International Brotherhood of Teamsters will host a rank-and-file Presidential roundtable with Vice President Kamala Harris on Monday, Sept. 16, in Washington, D.C. Harris has committed to meet with union members, the Teamsters General Executive Board, General President Sean M. O’Brien, and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman. “We appreciate Vice President Harris taking the time to meet in person with rank-and file Teamsters. Our members are the backbone of this nation, working in all 50 states and representing every political background. We look forward to having a conversation on the direction of the country and the issues that matter to working people,” O’Brien said. President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump attended Teamsters rank-and-file roundtables earlier this year. In December 2023, the Teamsters invited all declared candidates for U.S. President to participate in individual roundtables to discuss issues that are important to rank-and-file Teamsters and their families.

  • 3,700 Teamsters at Gate Gourmet Get Big Gains After Credible Strike Threat Over 8,000 airline foodservice workers at Gate Gourmet, including 3,700 Teamsters, have secured a five-year agreement that addresses key demands for wages and health care. The breakthrough follows a series of “ready to strike” rallies and a credible strike threat that forced the company to present a fair offer, averting a major nationwide strike. The new contract includes substantial wage increases and affordable health care coverage for Gate Gourmet workers at 30 airports across the U.S. “Our credible strike threat was the turning point,” said David Sehring, Teamsters Director of the Employee Representatives Council for Gate Gourmet. “When the company saw what they were up against, that thousands of workers were ready to walk off the job and withhold their labor, they were forced to present a fair offer."

  • THE AMERICAN WORKER’S POWER IS GREATER THAN ANY PARTY “More Americans know the truth now—when you don't have a voice on the job, don't have a contract protecting your work, aren't guaranteed raises, and have no defined path to a secure retirement, you are screwed. CEO compensation is the highest it's been. Corporate profits hit new records every year. Wall Street grows stronger but never promises not to crush your 401(k). Home prices are insane. And the federal minimum wage is a joke. “This is not sustainable. And that's why Americans are rediscovering a real solution to the problem—unions. “This Labor Day do not forget your leverage as a worker, no matter your job, title, education, or compensation. You possess extraordinary power and have many options to wield it, and the corporate and political elite know it.” Read Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien's Labor Day op-ed:

  • O’BRIEN, PADELLARO CELEBRATE NEW HAMPSHIRE AFL-CIO LABOR DAY BREAKFAST Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien joined Teamsters Brewery, Bakery, and Soft Drink Conference Director Jeff Padellaro and other labor leaders and supporters on Monday for the New Hampshire AFL-CIO Labor Day Breakfast. The Teamsters, additional unions, and rank-and-file members were supported during the annual event by U.S. Congressman Ro Khanna (CA-17) and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, as well as officers and business agents of Teamsters Local 633 from Manchester. “Labor across New Hampshire exemplifies some of the best of our trade union movement, regularly fighting back dangerous ‘right to work’ bills, winning some of the nation’s strongest contracts, and organizing more workers in diverse industries,” O’Brien said. “Through real collaboration and honest coalition-building, we will continue to improve the lives of working people in this state and around the country.”

  • “If the Painters ever find themselves in a fight, you’ll have the full power of the Teamsters Union standing behind you.” Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien helped the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) kick off its convention on Monday in Florida, thanking the Painters for being one of the first unions to throw its support behind 340,000 UPS Teamsters during our historic contract fight in 2023. O’Brien thanked IUPAT General President Jimmy Williams and all delegates for their brotherhood and solidarity in the labor movement, with the convention aptly themed, “One Union, One Family, One Fight.” The Teamsters General President also encouraged all Painters to work collaboratively with rank-and-file Teamsters to help take on the world’s greediest employer, Amazon. Like most building trades unions, the Painters help build Amazon facilities. “If Amazon is fine with union labor to build its facilities, they should have no problem having a union for their warehouse workers and delivery drivers,” O’Brien said. “Corporate America is our common enemy. Jeff Bezos and Amazon are some of the biggest, most lethal threats facing American workers today. But together, we can and we will force them to respect the men and women who make their success possible.” IUPAT represents more than 140,000 hardworking members in North America.

  • Railroad corporations like CN and CPKC want to exploit rail workers across borders. They have no allegiance to anyone besides their shareholders. They want to leave rail workers defenseless, fatigued, and without long-term protections for their families and union brothers and sisters. The Teamsters have bad news for CN and CPKC. We are 1.3 million members strong, including 60,000 railroad Teamsters across the U.S., who will fight like hell to protect 10,000 railroad workers in Teamsters Canada currently on picket lines across the continent.
