Students heading back to school this fall on the Pierce College campus in Puyallup will receive a ‘radical welcome’ from the new Johnson Science Building. But it’s not just a 'new' building. It embodies the progressive school’s inclusive philosophy of ‘radical welcoming’ — that in a diverse community of learners, everyone should be made to feel welcome, as innovative and engaged learners not only enrich themselves, but also their local and global communities. In this article by Principal Matthew Bissen, read how the form and function of this building supporting scientific innovation and excellence presents a 'radical welcome' to science to draw students to disciplines that have historically been difficult to reach for so many. Check out the full article in DJC Seattle 'Radical welcome to science'... https://lnkd.in/g5M5vR2q

We’re pleased to host a Design Soiree for the Seattle Architecture Foundation! Join us on Thursday, October 3rd for ‘Map the Square’ – an engaging and interactive exercise, discussing opportunities to evolve Pioneer Square through thoughtful zoning and adaptive reuse of its unreinforced masonry buildings. The evening will start with a brief presentation from regional expert Kathryn Rogers Merlino, an Associate Professor at the UW School of Architecture and Director of the Center for Preservation and Adaptive Reuse, followed by an interactive team exercise in and around Occidental Park, concluding with feedback/presentations from mapping teams about observations and outcomes of the exercise. This activity repeats one held a decade ago – when A Gallery hosted an interactive community art installation giving participants the chance to consider Pioneer Square from the perspective of a planner, to brainstorm future development needs. Let’s see what’s changed – and generate ideas for the future! Light food and beverages will be provided. This is also a "First Thursday" event, so check out the A Gallery exhibit featuring the thought-provoking work of Erin Shigaki of Purple Gate Design. Tickets still available, see our stories to register. See you there! SAF Design Soiree – ‘Map the Square’ Thursday, October 3 Integrus Architecture Union Trust Annex 117 S. Main Street Seattle, WA

U.S. Embassy, Maputo, Ever consider what it takes to design an embassy? This cover feature in Federal Construction Magazine, authored by Integrus Associate Principal and project manager Jesse Walt, highlights the complex story of bringing the U.S. embassy in Maputo, Mozambique, to reality for the U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Overseas Buildings Operations (OBO). The LEED Gold embassy supports its diplomatic mission by respecting the local context and beautifully expressing environmental leadership through energy-efficient design strategies, in the creation of a dynamic and welcoming structure representing the U.S. abroad. Our installation for the Seattle Design Festival lives on! It was a hit at the two-day festival in early September, and our team was asked by the Downtown Seattle Association to stage it near Westlake Center, in support of the International Downtown Association Annual Conference. Good thing it was designed and engineered in a way so it could be moved and reconstructed! We continue to strive to bring creative vital spaces into the world and the city we care deeply about and are honored by this opportunity. Titled ‘Untethered Bodies’, the triangular space is designed to bend people’s perception to consider ‘How do we see ourselves vs. how others view us?’ when moving through three unfolding panels of intertwined images using different scales, colors, perspectives. It is open to all Seattleites and visitors to engage with throughout the weekend. Come check it out thru September 15th at McGraw Square near the Westin Hotel!

It has been a wonderful collaboration since YGH and Integrus came together two years ago! There is much to celebrate—including many exciting opportunities to design meaningful places in the public realm. This work benefits from our combined talents, and shared values of environmental stewardship and social justice, to support communities with their goals. Coming together as two firms also strengthens the value and depth of our future leadership and expands the high caliber of design insight and capabilities we bring, providing a solid foundation from which to serve clients into the future. Through our work together we are achieving goals to meet our 2030 sustainability commitments. Through participation in the JUST label we are continuing to prioritize equity, inclusion and transparency of operational practices in all three offices. We continue to diversify our shareholder group (nearly 50% women owned) and actively pursue an inclusive work environment. Our firm remains deeply committed in our response to social injustices and embedded biases. We are working with more minority and BIPOC consultants, along with numerous projects with Indigenous clients. Now in our 71st year, we look forward to a bright future and appreciate the opportunity to work with amazing clients and partners. Here’s to many more years of innovation and success! #Anniversary #CompanyMerger #DesignExcellence #PacificNorthwest #NewBeginnings #TeamGrowth #InnovativeDesign

Where would the design world be without specifiers? They are an integral part of the design process, tracking related industry standards for the knowledge to recommend relevant product and materials solutions, with increased attention toward sustainable design for effective project delivery and performance. CSI (Construction Specifications Institute) is the national specifier industry organization. This week, two Integrus colleagues step into top positions with the CSI Puget Sound Chapter. Julie Taylor is now president, and Charlie Calvano, will serve as president-elect. Julie Taylor, Specifications Writer, Senior Associate, specifies products and materials for our work in the K12 school design arena, with a focus on healthy and low embodied carbon materials. She also contributes to our firm’s overall product and materials learning, by organizing the Seattle ‘Lunch & Learn’ series and arranging informative companywide knowledge share sessions. Julie joined CSI in 2008 and has been a member of the annual ProSpec event committee since 2015. Charlie Calvano, Architect & Senior Associate, contributes to the firm on all things related to code and technical aspects of a project. He builds on his extensive experience as a project architect to serve as a mentor to younger staff. This includes developing an internal Knowledge Share Series program making technical information available as the solid foundation on which to build a career in architecture. He is currently working on construction of the new Tyee High School in the Highline School District. Charlie has been with CSI since 2005 and on the ProSpec committee since 2008. We appreciate all these two do for our projects. And we wish Julie well in her new role and anticipate Charlie will enjoy this year prepping for his own term next year!
