In current news: for Inside Philanthropy, here's a look at the #CrimeSurvivorsSpeak march that is happening right now -- and the funders, including Ford Foundation and The Just Trust, that have made it possible. Make no mistake: most crime survivors (myself included) do *not* want a return to #toughoncrime policies. As Aswad Thomas, MSW told me for this piece, “As we’ve seen this year and in the 1990s, whenever there’s a spike in crime and violence, our immediate reaction in this nation is to be tough on crime, invest in more cops on the street, and lock people up and throw away the key. That’s always been our natural reaction to this issue. What we’re saying as victims is, that hasn’t worked for us for the past 30 years. We don’t see it working for us today.” Alliance for Safety and Justice Jolene Forman Joshua Hoe #CJreform #philanthropy #funders #protest #march #2024election #RighttoHeal

For Inside Philanthropy, I spoke to the great actress Aja Naomi King about her philanthropy, including her work as a L'Oréal Paris USA brand ambassador, championing its Women of Worth program, celebrating female grassroots nonprofit leaders. This year's honorees include Wawa Gatheru and Hillary Cohen. This particular passage stands out: Another Women of Worth honoree this year is Dr. Tonya Stafford of Dallas, founder and executive director of It's Going to Be OK, which provides trauma-informed services and support to survivors of human trafficking. When she’s not helping select Women of Worth awardees, one the biggest focuses of King’s early giving has been the mental health and wellness space (also an area L’Oreal has focused on, including through it's brand Maybelline's Brave Together Initiative ) In that work, she joins other celebrity givers like Selena Gomez and Kevin Love, who have also focused on these causes, both through their own contributions and by using their platforms to spread awareness. Something similar can be said about how King seeks to highlight the Women of Worth grantee cohort. “Honestly, the most beautiful thing about it is that there are so many women doing such profound work,” she said. #nonprofit #philanthropy #LOreal #women #grassroots https://lnkd.in/gMDFE7U8
