Top 4 Predictions (Takeaways) from PitchBook's 2024 Healthcare Outlook 1. Healthcare will decrease as a share of both PE and VC global deal count Healthcare's share of global PE deal count peaked at 13.7% in 2020 (COVID acting as an accelerant), and fell to 10.8% - its lowest level since 2015 - in 2023. Analysts expect PE healthcare managers to continue deploying capital into existing portfolio companies and lower-middle-market platforms, with occasional opportunistic carveouts and take-privates. ***most sponsors will prefer at this point to elongate their typical holding periods rather than accept subpar returns, at least in 2024. If/when the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates in earnest, the floodgates could crack open and the most conservatively leveraged platforms will likely lead the way*** 2. Although digital health IPO's will fall short of optimistic projections, at least three candidates will go public Even in a soft-landing scenario, wherein interest rates begin to decline-as currently predicted by the futures market - this will take time to flow through to the venture market, and "we do not believe that slightly lower rates will be a quick fix for driving significant deal flow and IPO's." 3. Surgical robotics will continue to be a leading VC category - surpassing 2023 funding levels. Currently valued around $10B, the global surgical robotics market is estimated to exceed $20B by 2023, with an annual growth rate of more than 10%. The three primary drivers are: an aging population leading to a significant increase in demand for soft tissue procedures, blue-sky opportunities in areas not currently targeted by surgical robot incumbents, and new iterations of robots that help improve efficiency and require less mental focus - helping resolve burnout and workforce shortages. 4. There will be at least two value-based-care (VBC) enabler acquisitions Enablement is the most important mechanism by which the VBC transition will play out in the US over the next five to 10 years, with significant change on the horizon for the VBC landscape, starting in 2024. It'll be interesting to look in the rear view mirror 12 months from now and assess how this plays out. From a VBC perspective, we at Physician Growth Partners along with our colleagues at InHealth Advisors maintain a thesis that independent physician practices in certain specialties that can demonstrate capabilities in the VBC space will garner more investor interest and likely higher valuations relative to similarly-situated practices that cannot.
