🚨 Today we've published our analysis of industry lobbying efforts last year on the EU Critical Raw Materials Act (#CRMA). This act was under final consultation between March and June 2023, during which time many industry actors tracked by the LobbyMap database engaged with the legislation. Among other things, the Act aims to increase the security of supply of critical materials in Europe for the energy transition, and increase their circularity. The IPCC recognizes that both circular material flows and climate and energy planning are key levels in creating sustainable critical raw material supply chains. Therefore - positive corporate advocacy in this area looks like: 🚜 support for decarbonizing critical raw material supply chains; ⭕ bolstering existing support for circular raw material flows; and 🌱efforts to increase the sustainability of supply chains for energy transition technologies. Overall our research found that there is broad support for circular economy provisions under the EU CRMA - including from sectors such as chemicals, metals, energy and utilities - despite some resistance from some mining and automotive sector groups. However, only 33% of respondents covered by the LobbyMap database engaged in support of measures to decarbonize critical raw material supply chains -  a lack of engagement on provisions to aid in decarbonizing critical raw material supply chains may result in less robust rules that make it harder for the EU to meet its commitments under the European Green Deal. We also found that: ◾ In the metals and mining sector, entities more active in metals processing and recycling expressed the most support for increasing the circularity of critical raw material supply chains. In contrast, mining associations were generally unsupportive of the circularity rules.  ◾The chemicals sector was also consistently supportive of circularity provisions ◾Automotive companies had a high rate of negative engagement compared to other sectors, particularly among industry associations. Only Volvo Cars from the automotive sector strongly supported the Act’s circularity provisions, including the extension of the EU recycling market and support for the Act’s detailed recycling provisions. In September, the Draghi report into EU competitiveness included as one of its recommendations that the CRMA be extended to include an EU raw materials platform. This would leverage the EU’s collective resources and market power for securing, managing and stockpiling critical raw materials. Analysis of this kind can be instructive for anticipating what engagement from industry this new suggestion may elicit. 📣 🚨 NEW from InfluenceMap! We’ve just published our Q3 Fossil Fuel Bulletin, the latest in our quarterly newsletters covering corporate lobbying trends related to the fossil fuel value chain. Key trends we’ve highlighted: 🇦🇺 Persistently high levels of negative engagement from fossil fuel interests in Australia threaten to undermine the objectives of the Capacity Market Investment Scheme and national electricity and energy sector plans. Our research finds that oil and gas companies, along with their industry associations, continue to advocate for the inclusion of fossil gas in transition policies and push for further investment in new fossil gas projects. 🛢 Evidence of ENI lobbying European policymakers to promote LNG in Mozambique. This is despite the Italian headquartered energy giant being bound by EU policy to reduce LNG in line with agreed transition timelines. 📣 NEW from InfluenceMap: Our latest Methane Bulletin has just been published, tracking advocacy and regulation for this potent greenhouse gas. Despite new policies and voluntary measures announced in the past year to address methane emissions, global methane levels are still reported to be rising rapidly and are expected to continue increasing through the decade without immediate, drastic action. Since pre-industrial times, methane has accounted for 0.5 °C of global warming, compared to 0.8 °C from carbon dioxide. Our bulletins address some of the key developments that will significantly impact the efforts to reduce methane emissions. This bulletin includes: 🐄 Industry resistance to Denmark’s pioneering emissions tax targeting agricultural methane emissions. 🇺🇸 How the outcome of the US election could significantly impact the country’s methane regulatory efforts. 🌍 How the EU’s Methane Regulation can provide a strong benchmark for methane reduction policies in Asia. Today we released our annual Climate Policy Engagement Leaders Report!     ⚖ Every year, this report highlights leading companies helping to tip the scales in favor of ambitious climate policy, laying the groundwork for more to do the same.    🛢 InfluenceMap analysis regularly finds that the majority of advocacy on key climate policies still comes from vested fossil fuel interests seeking to delay progress.   📈 This is why tracking positive progress, and sharing tools and knowledge is so key to driving the change we need to meet internationally agreed climate commitments.   💼 And why we still need more companies to replicate these examples of best practice in order to really turn the tables on these actors.   Here are three key takeaways from the report:   1️⃣ This year, 40 companies reached our minimum criteria for recognition.   These are companies which have strategic and science-aligned direct advocacy on climate. In addition, their overall indirect (trade association) influence is not opposing climate policy.   2️⃣ National climate policy engagement is key.    From the list of 40 we have recognized 8 regional leaders in each of the three most important categories for Climate Policy Engagement.   These categories capture leadership in: 🔵 Science-Aligned Advocacy 🔵 Strategic Engagement 🔵 Addressing Indirect Influence.   But even companies who are recognized as leaders in one of these three can, and should, be doing more.   3️⃣ Several high performing companies have emerged in new geographies that are either too small to qualify for this report, or fall just shy of the criteria.   Examples of this include ReNew Power Private Ltd and Mahindra & Mahindra in India, and LONGi Green Energy Technology in China.   We anticipate that leadership in these regions by fast-growing companies will be critical for achieving necessary emissions reductions on a global scale.   🌎 💡 Overall, more strategic, science aligned advocacy is needed to drive positive action further and faster, and of particular importance is collaboration by the corporate sector in addressing trade association misalignment.   Read the full report now: https://lnkd.in/eGiBj8rs Dylan Tanner Ed Collins Kendra Haven Kitty Hatchley

Yesterday, the EU published the much anticipated results of their ‘Strategic Dialogue on the Future of EU Agriculture’. This dialogue took input from 29 participants and further consulted the views of key stakeholders, many of whom featured in our report The European Meat and Dairy Sector's Climate Policy Engagement. Jennifer Gullery, Land Use Analyst assessed the report: “The Strategic Dialogue on the Future of Agriculture does seem to place significant emphasis on climate and emissions reduction in the agricultural sector. Although we can clearly see some of the key narratives from the meat and dairy industry playbook echoed in the report - including emphasizing the fundamental role for livestock in maintaining the “fabric of rural communities”, and the key role for animal based products as part of a healthy and sustainable diet - it appears that actors advocating for science-aligned climate policy have also had their voices heard. Our analysis suggests that over the last five years there has been a split between different parts of the meat and dairy sector; with consumer goods focused companies appearing to engage more often to maintain the ambition of policies aimed at reducing emissions from the sector than meat and dairy producer companies and their industry association representatives. It is possible that the parts of the food sector that are more in favour of climate reforms have had more influence than in the past. However, the real test is still to come on whether the EU will develop the findings of the review into binding climate policy, which will no doubt attract significant lobbying efforts from various parts of the meat and dairy industry over the course of the next legislative cycle.” Read her comments in the EUobserver: https://lnkd.in/eQeAUHid Read more on our work highlighting industry narratives from the Meat and Dairy Industry: https://lnkd.in/eaY3fKv4 Venetia Roxburgh Kitty Hatchley Ed Collins

💡 Last week InfluenceMap released new research looking at How the US Gas Industry is Promoting LNG on Social Media. This analysis revealed a surge in spending on social media ads from the fossil fuel industry in response to Biden’s LNG export pause. It also highlighted the key narratives used in these ads. Let’s debunk some of those claims 👇 🌎 Narrative 1: LNG is a Climate Solution and a key part of the global energy transition. ❗ FACT CHECK ❗ LNG is still a fossil fuel, primarily methane, a greenhouse gas 86x more potent than CO2 over 20 years. Its production and transport emits significant GHGs, complicating its role as a "climate solution." 🗳 Narrative 2: The LNG Pause is politically motivated ❗FACT CHECK ❗ The pause aligns with IPCC guidelines urging rapid emissions cuts by moving away from fossil fuels, including fossil gas, to limit warming to 1.5°C. This decision reflects adherence to scientific advice, not just politics. 🏭 Narrative 3: Reducing LNG supply increases global reliance on coal ❗ FACT CHECK ❗ Current data doesn't strongly support this idea. The IEA projects significant declines in coal usage in key markets like the EU and China, and after decoupling from Russian gas, the EU chose to expand renewable energy infrastructure instead of developing coal.
