As healthcare administrators, we know that every step in patient care can have downstream effects—especially in cardiology, where precision and timing are essential. Yet today, prior authorizations are responsible for up to 50% of denials in many cardiology practices, stemming from complex requirements that can delay or even prevent necessary care. Here’s why: Rapid Response Windows... Cardiac care often demands fast action—procedures can’t wait weeks. However, we frequently see that prior authorization windows (sometimes as short as one or two days) leave little room for error or delay. Multiple Documentation Requirements… Each piece of documentation must be flawless to avoid denials. If the authorization doesn't match the exact diagnosis or coding details, the entire claim can fall through. Manual Processes and High Follow-Up Demand… Currently, securing authorizations often involves 20-60 minutes per case, moving through payer portals or phone calls—a burden that strains staff and resources. What’s the actionable takeaway? Prioritize automation in authorization workflows and integrated documentation management to streamline approvals and avoid the backlog that leads to denials. By reducing manual errors and automating cross-checks, we can start to turn the tide on denial rates, cutting down on revenue loss and administrative strain. It’s time we redefine how prior authorizations work in cardiology—and move toward solutions that keep patient care timely and denial rates under control.

AVP, Communications at Infinx Healthcare | B2B Healthcare Marketing Leader | Crafting Communication Strategies That Drive Demand & Amplify Sales Efforts
As I leave the KLAS Research Revenue Cycle Summit, I’m left reflecting on the insights shared among the 134 revenue cycle leaders at this event. Just like snowflakes (see my photo - beautiful weather), no two revenue cycle management (RCM) teams are alike—and that uniqueness came through in every conversation. Key Takeaways: 1. RCM Governance Matters: J.D. Whitlock emphasized the need for a strong governance framework, with executive support tailored to each organization's culture. He also recommended a few key resources to follow, I'm excited to check them out: ✅ AI Health Uncut ✅ Eric Bricker, MD ✅ The HealthTech Marketing Show 2. Priorities for Providers: According to KLAS' Rebecca Hammond, providers are laser-focused on denials management, automation, and prior authorization. Interestingly, there's also a growing emphasis on employee well-being—refreshing to see this become a priority! 3. Hybrid Outsourcing Approach: Velnette Fenker shared her team’s strategy of outsourcing high-volume, low-dollar tasks offshore to streamline non-value-added work. Centralizing eligibility and benefits verification has also boosted team performance. 4. Positive Engagement for RCM Results: Philip Boyce highlighted the value of engaging team members through podcasts and vlogs and shared how a vendor management committee has helped streamline RFP processes. 5. Advice for Vendors: A panelist’s advice stood out: “Stop acting like you're smarter than me.” Vendors should be open to provider's data (not just their own) and align with company culture for a true partnership. 6. Cybersecurity Reminders: Mike Green underscored the importance of vendor collaboration with security and IT teams, and the need to vet all partners carefully due to the rising number of bad actors. 7. Tips on Preventing Denials: Infinx Chief Product Officer Navaneeth Nair shared that front-office transparency and a clear understanding of what’s needed can greatly reduce denials. On payer challenges, no one has the perfect solution, but involving the contracting team, leveraging data, and using scorecards were among the practical steps shared. Each conversation and panel session highlighted that RCM is evolving, with both immediate and forward-thinking strategies in play. These takeaways remind me that in this complex field, progress is best achieved through conversation and collaboration. Thank you KLAS. Shout out to Mike Green for channeling the Big Lebowski vibes in style today (see other pic for sweater inspiration)!
