100% Literacy For All

About us

At Indy Reads, our mission is to build the literacy, English language, and job readiness skills to empower adults and families to reach their full potential. Our vision is 100% literacy for all. Indy Reads uses a Community Classrooms model and community programs in our bookstore to promote equity through literary and literacy events and classes. Our ELL, HSE, and certifications programs are available virtually, on-site in Fountain Square, and in Community Classrooms throughout Indianapolis at no cost to students. Your support and involvement is crucial to the success of our organization. Here are some of the ways you can get involved: Shop: In November 2021, we opened Indy Reads in Fountain Square. We sell new and used books for adults and children and run pay-what-you-can events for the community. The profits from the bookstore go directly toward improving literacy in our community through Indy Reads. The bookstore has several full and part time staff members, but it could not survive without the help our volunteers. Volunteer: Our organization would not be successful without the unwavering support of our volunteers. With the various programs we offer, there is sure to be a good fit for you. Visit our website to see how you can register to volunteer. Donate: We understand that not everyone has time to volunteer. Your financial support is also crucial in helping us realize our vision of 100% literacy for all. Become a member of our Literacy League as a recurring donor or make a one-time donation at indyreads.org/donate.

Dear Friends, In our 40th anniversary year, we served 413 adult learners in our adult education programs who dedicated 22,975 hours to their education in our Community Classrooms! Our PY2023-2024 Impact Report has just been released, and you will find the impact of those hours spent on developing reading and English language skills, earning High School Equivalency diplomas, gaining hands-on experience in our workforce certifications programs, and shining as leaders in our community bookstore programming. It is thanks to our dedicated team of staff, teachers, board members, and volunteers who uplift each of our adult learners and community programs that we are able to bring our mission to life last year. In particular, it is thanks to a record 321 volunteers who demonstrated their commitment to literacy for all, giving 7,360 hours of service as tutors, bookstore helpers, and behind the scenes supporters of administrative and special projects. Friends, there is something special about the magic that is Indy Reads. We are what we are, because you are part of our community. Thank you for being a part of Indy Reads, for supporting us for 40 years, and for helping us to launch the next 40 years of literacy for all! With gratitude, Ruba Marshood Chief Executive Officer Read the full impact report at indyreads.org/impact.

Our sincerest thanks to The Clowes Fund, Inc. for selecting Indy Reads as their most recent grantee spotlight! We are honored for their continued support as we advance social equity through education. "ADVANCING SOCIAL EQUITY THROUGH EDUCATION (Fall 2024). For more than 40 years, Indy Reads has been working towards its vision of 100% literacy for all. Each program year, Indy Reads serves more than 400 adult learners in its tuition-free High School Equivalency (HSE), English Language Learning (ELL), Literacy Foundations, and workforce certifications Community Classrooms. Indy Reads also operates a community bookstore in Fountain Square that hosts more than 250 events annually and makes the joy of reading accessible to all. Since 1984, Indy Reads has maintained a commitment to serving the most beginning-level learners with the Literacy Foundations program. As 1 in 6 Hoosiers cannot read above a fifth-grade level, this unique program meets a critical need in the central Indiana adult education sector. Across all of Indy Reads’ programs, 95% of students are immigrants, people of color, and/or living below 200% of the federal poverty line. In its 2023-24 program year, Indy Reads served adult learners from 48 different countries who speak 35 different languages."
