Today is the start of National Disability Rights Awareness Month in South Africa – the theme is ‘Consolidate and accelerate rights of persons with disabilities into the future’. It runs from 3 November and ends on 3 December 2024 International Day of Persons with Disabilities. Many organisations use this month to celebrate and focus on disability inclusion initiatives which is a positive action - but sadly persons with disabilities are forgotten after this month when it is treated as a tick box exercise. This approach continues to deny the rights and participation of persons with disabilities in society which further widens the digital divide. Stop treating accessibility and disability inclusion as a project with a start and end date. It must be engrained in the organisation’s strategy and culture which makes it easier to eliminate barriers such as making reasonable accommodation. Doing this promotes safe and inclusive workplaces for employees with disabilities and ensure dignified customer experiences for consumers with disabilities. Although there have been wins in promoting accessibility and disability inclusion in Africa, much more must be done to provide equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. Progress includes Sign Language becoming the 12th official language in South Africa, The African Disability Protocol Framework, the ICT Standards and the Disability and ICT Framework Indicators. Please mention more initiatives that is driving disability inclusion – often great initiatives are implemented, but it remains invisible as we do not talk enough about it. Let’s use Disability Month to assess how we can uplift and increase the participation of persons with disabilities in society. How can we bring policies to life increasing employment and career advancement opportunities (less than one percent of disabled persons are employed), protect disabled persons human rights, focus on the intersection of disability and gender and provide accessible technology, products and services ensuring persons with disabilities are fully integrated in all areas of society. If you are interested to learn more about increasing and supporting the accessibility and disability inclusion narrative in Africa, visit the AfricaCom and AfricaTech conference taking place in Cape Town from 11-14 Nov 2024. inABLE #DisabilityMonth #Accessibility #DisabilityRights #FullInclusion #EqualOpportunities ID: Karen is a white woman standing on crutches whilst speaking on a microphone.
