The state agency that protects the right to live free from discrimination, in every aspect of life.
About us
The Illinois Department of Human Rights (IDHR) is the state agency responsible for administrating and enforcing the Illinois Human Rights Act. The mission of IDHR is to secure for all individuals within the State of Illinois freedom from unlawful discrimination and to establish and promote equal opportunity and affirmative action as the policy of this state for all its residents. The Department of Human Rights administers the Illinois Human Rights Act. The Illinois Human Rights Act ("Act") prohibits discrimination in Illinois with respect to employment, financial credit, public accommodations and real estate transactions on the bases of race, color, religion, sex (including sexual harassment), national origin, ancestry, military status, age (40 and over), order of protection status, marital status, sexual orientation (which includes gender-related identity), unfavorable military discharge and physical and mental disability. The Act also prohibits sexual harassment in education, discrimination because of citizenship status and arrest record in employment, and discrimination based on familial status in real estate transactions. A discrimination charge can be initiated by calling, writing or appearing in person at the Department’s Chicago or Springfield office within 180 days of the date the alleged discrimination took place in all cases except housing discrimination (one year filing deadline).

The Illinois Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes and the Illinois Department of Human Rights provided testimony for the historic Senate Judiciary Committee hearing happening now. Tune in: https://lnkd.in/gj8p3TJf "Recent years and events have seen rising social division, conflict, targeted violence, and hate crime. While hate crime law, policy, and prevention cannot solve all the social challenges we have as a society, it is a key forum where we (government, communities, and citizens) come together to work out the boundaries and rules for how we get along and manage conflict and disagreement. Hate crimes have outsized, amplified resonance and impact on the individuals and communities that are affected. One of the most important ways we as a society and as a government can demonstrate to all people that they are protected and that we care for them is to prevent and properly respond to hate crimes. The core and key vehicle for Illinois’s statewide approach has been the Illinois Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes, a Governor-appointed advisory commission that began its work in 2021 and has helped establish Illinois as a leader and innovator among states."
