I will say over and over, that the thing I love most about my mission and the work I do at Meaningful Marks LLC is uplifting and amplifying generative and transformative work being done by individuals or organizations in community. The Chicago Department of Public Health and the Cook County Government Bureau of Economic Development are partnering with the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI) to develop the first-ever community-centered Regionwide Community Information Exchange® (CIE) A Community Information Exchange, or CIE, “is a network of health and social service organizations and agencies that develop shared governance to support the needs of community members. It serves as a care management hub, allowing participating providers to deliver more responsive, more effective community care planning for people who face multiple, often related, challenges (for example, food insecurity, unstable housing, and access to health care). A CIE puts “people” at the center and is designed to streamline care coordination across multiple service providers. It looks at ALL the needs of a person, not just one aspect.”   I had the opportunity to support Rashidat Balogun, Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI), and Joi Ross, APEX DIRECT INC, in their work to create a regionwide Community Information Exchange.  Their team focused on Shelter-Based Care and Medical Respite Care, interviewing approximately 100 stakeholders (service providers and those with lived experience), to gather narrative data about the process and the opportunities that surfaced during the conversations.  Being embedded in the process as a visual practitioner allowed me to support their work along the way. First, I  joined them virtually to graphic record one of the community engagement sessions. The next question was how to represent the aggregate narrative data in an engaging way to share the input.  VISUALS, of course! Second, we collaborated on drafts of two journey maps to tell the story of what it is like to travel through the shelter care with lived experience or as a service provider.  After gathering feedback, I created the final digital images of the journey maps. The third step was to create clip art from parts of the journey maps to be used in the slide deck they were preparing for their final presentation.   Lastly, I joined them again virtually to graphic record as the IPHI team (Waldo Mikels-Carrasco, Catherine Gillis, Ellen Clewett, MPH, Laura Nixon, and Ed Stellon) presented their work to community members.  There are so many ways to leverage visuals in this work and I loved seeing the team share the final graphic recording in their follow-up email to those who attended the presentation of all of their work. Celebrate #NationalBreastfeedingMonth with IAPOH! Since 2011, August has been recognized as National Breastfeeding Awareness Month to advocate for the policy and practice changes needed to create a more supportive environment for breastfeeding and lactation. At the Illinois Alliance to Promote Opportunities for Health (IAPOH), convened by the Illinois Public Health Institute, we are committed to promoting opportunities for health and advancing health justice and racial equity through supporting communities, bridging partners and changing policy and systems change. IAPOH seeks to increase access to culturally relevant breastfeeding information, improve continuity of care and support for breastfeeding in communities, and improve provider lactation support and knowledge. By partnering with local health departments and Women, Infant and Children (WIC) sites, hospitals and health systems, primary care organizations, home visiting organizations, and local leaders in healthcare and communities, we can make breastfeeding more accessible to all Illinoisians. This August, join IAPOH in celebrating National Breastfeeding Month by sharing key messages and resources and learn more about supporting breastfeeding in Illinois.
