Thank you Julia Dobbins, MSW for traveling in from Nashville and for sharing such pithy learnings and recommendations. You and Brandon Cook are phenomenal partners at National Health Care for the Homeless Council, National Institute for Medical Respite Care. Thank you Jill Hayden and Rachel Thomas for hosting and moderating the panel. Thank you Richard Ducatenzeiler, Kathleen Recchia (and Anais Fuentes and Sabina Wong) and The Boulevard of Chicago for being such a strong foundational leader for medical respite care in Illinois. Thank you Michael M., Kristin Hartsaw, and Gabriela Moroney for your partnership in moving toward medical respite benefits for Medicaid in Illinois. And, thanks to all the other leaders within the Illinois Medical Respite Capacity Building Initiative including all the people with lived expertise who lead and shape the design and rollout of these programs -- the panelists gave insight into the work going on across Illinois, and we are so appreciative of the work you all put in every day.

Great night celebrating Elissa Bassler’s retirement from the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI). Congratulations on this milestone!

On any given night in Illinois, over 11,000 people are experiencing literal #homelessness across the state (1) - living in shelters and transitional housing programs, in parks and abandoned buildings, in cars and in barns. In addition to Illinois residents who are experiencing literal homelessness, tens of thousands of Illinois families live temporarily and unstably with family and friends. The Illinois Medical Respite Capacity Building Initiative (IMRCBI), led by the Illinois Public Health Institute (IPHI)with funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services and support from the Illinois Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), was created in response to this housing crisis. Medical respite, or recuperative care, services are critical for people experiencing #homelessness to heal and recover in a safe, comfortable space. Get involved with the IMRCBI! Apply for #funding: The initiative will provide funding for planning and implementation of new or expanded medical respite services in Illinois, along with technical assistance and a learning collaborative for funded communities on developing or expanding medical respite programs that serve Illinoisians experiencing homelessness.
