  • The IDHS Office of Firearm Violence Prevention seeks to provide $46 million to fund community-based organizations throughout Chicago and Greater Illinois that are dedicated to addressing firearm violence in targeted areas. These organizations will engage individuals at the highest risk of becoming victims or perpetrators of gun violence. Funded programs will use evidence-informed strategies designed to improve personal outcomes, promote resilience, and reduce the social and environmental factors that contribute to firearm violence. Through the Government Alliance for Safe Communities initiative, we are reinforcing our commitment to creating safer neighborhoods and advancing long-term public safety outcomes across the state. “Every life lost to gun violence leaves a lasting impact on our communities. Through this initiative, we are investing in solutions that center on the people most impacted, empowering them with services and support rooted in evidence-based practices,” said Quiwana Bell, Illinois Department of Human Services Assistant Secretary Designate, Office of Firearm Violence Prevention. “Our mission is not only to reduce the immediate threat of firearm violence but to build pathways to brighter futures where safety, opportunity, and hope are within reach for every resident across Illinois.” Applications are due by December 4, 2024. • The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation does crucial work to fund and support civil legal aid programs and ensure equal access to the justice system in our state. We thank them for their mission and for recently featuring IDHS Secretary Designate Dulce Maria Quintero with a Q&A in their newsletter. “Housing, like nutritious food and health care, is a critical part of the State’s safety net, and sometimes the legal system is needed to protect tenants from landlords. We are grateful to the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation for supporting our mission,” said Secretary Quintero. Read on for more: https://bit.ly/3NJocVJ

  • Governor Pritzker proclaimed October 2024 as Recovery Support Celebration Month in Illinois. This month, we celebrate recovery support specialists as they are increasingly integrated into the fabric of our workforce and the landscape of our lives.  Today, we feature Dorie M. Warren Jr, Certified Peer Recovery Specialists at Take Action Today. "Becoming a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist has been a journey within itself. I’m helping those who want assistance towards a different way of life, and not to just exist or become a statistic. I want everyone to know about the services that we offer to people from all walks of life. For me, finding your vision is important — finding the God of your own understanding, consistency, persistence, and a goal that you want for yourself. Because a journey without a vision is just a journey. Peer recovery has allowed me to reach the people who maybe wouldn’t listen to me unless I could share my recovery journey with them. Recovery is real, it does and can happen. I am forever grateful." Take Action Today is a fully independent, grassroots recovery community organization led by people in recovery, for people in recovery. Their goal is to create a vibrant community where people seeking recovery from chronic substance use and homelessness can find the resources and support they need to achieve their goals — empowering people in recovery to be catalysts of change and creating a more recovery-oriented system of care. • IDHS is committed to supporting and uplifting our LGBTQ+ community. Secretary Designate Dulce Maria Quintero joined Congressman Jesús "Chuy" García and LGBTQ+ leaders from around the state to identify ways of protecting and advancing LGBTQ+ rights. Thank you to Congressman García for bringing together this group and for always being a champion in the fight against the coordinated national and statewide efforts to strip rights of expression, love, and representation.

  • Healthcare Alternative Systems, Inc. (H.A.S.) is a partner in IDHS’s Medication Assisted Recovery Program, meeting people where they are by providing harm-reduction services, like access to medication within 24 to 48 hours that can reduce overdose risk by 50%. IDHS Secretary Designate Dulce Maria Quintero recently joined the celebration of HAS's 50th anniversary, recognizing staff and leadership for their ongoing dedication and work. “For the very first time, we are seeing a reduction of overdoses across the nation, including Illinois. We could not do this work without you,” Secretary Quintero told HAS staff. From the group’s early beginnings operating from a basement, to having multiple buildings across the Chicagoland area, HAS continues with its mission to provide multicultural and bilingual behavioral health care and social services to communities that are often underserved by the health care system.
