While there appears to be some encouraging news on burnout among physicians, rates are still alarmingly high, with nearly 50% of physicians reporting at least one symptom of burnout. Valuing and empowering the people in their organizations is a core responsibility for leaders, but too many efforts to improve engagement, culture, and retention focus on trying to fix the people, instead of focusing on the complex and high-priced systems in which they work. In an article published by Becker's Healthcare, IHI President and CEO Dr. Kedar Mate and IHI Vice President Josh Clark discuss the impact of care operating systems—comprehensive systems of care that are improving worker well-being by reigniting a sense of joy and purpose in their daily work. "The Paradox of Experience: How It Can Both Help and Hinder Us" In a new blog from IHI, we explore why some longtime health care professionals may view their relationship to a degree program as more transactional than educational. We speak with Juli Maxworthy DNP, PhD(c), MSN, MBA, RN, FNAP, FSSH, Associate Professor at University of California, San Francisco, teaching in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program, about her experience using IHI Open School courses for her students. When they start in Maxworthy’s course, the adult learners in her class can have a task-oriented attitude toward health care quality and safety. "Open School gives them ‘the why’ and ‘the how’ to help support health care improvement work,” she remarked. “They open up all kinds of new ways of thinking.” Read the full blog: https://go.ihi.org/3AsxzpB Click here to access more than 30 online courses and start your quality improvement journey with IHI Open School: https://go.ihi.org/3AmqE1k

Ahead of her keynote speech at IHI Forum 2024, we caught up with New York Times best-selling author Tembi Locke for a discussion on the co-creation of care between caregivers and health care professionals. She shares the story of a time a nurse came up with a creative solution to reunite her husband with their young daughter in the hospital lobby, despite this move being against hospital norms. “I greatly appreciated the willingness to attempt something that, quite frankly,” Locke recounts, “was life changing for all of us.” Read the full interview: https://go.ihi.org/3CeCAmb Click here to learn more about IHI Forum 2024 and secure your spot today: https://go.ihi.org/4e7xdmn
