About us
IGNITE is a movement of young women who are ready and eager to become the next generation of political leaders. Since our inception in 2010, IGNITE has trained 20,000+ young women to discover and flex their political power. From a small pilot program in Oakland, California, IGNITE has become the nation's leading organization harnessing political ambition, community building, and leadership skills among young women and girls. Our model moves young women to run and win, and it dramatically increases their political engagement on every level. We also know that programming is not enough: we uplift inspiring voices in our community to celebrate and cultivate young women's ambitions.

John Lewis was a public servant who organized tirelessly for marginalized groups to have the right to vote. The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is a blueprint for continuing this work, but it's been stuck in Congress for years during a time when we need it most. Congrats to Sriya Srinivasan on getting AB 2229 signed into law!! Her determination and dedication has created a new standard for reproductive education in CA.
Student Trustee of Solano Community College | Founder-President of SCC's Reproductive Health Club (RHC) | Sponsor of AB 2229 (Know Your Period)
It’s official: AB 2229, the KNOW YOUR PERIOD bill, is now LAW! Last week, Gavin Newsom signed our bill, and it feels surreal to see this idea become reality. This wouldn’t have been possible without all of you: my peers, Lori D Wilson team, our amazing partners, and everyone who supported us along the way. It all started with 15-year-old me, reading statistic after statistic about menstruators facing challenges—people like myself. I knew things had to change but didn’t know how... yet. On Halloween, I posted a Change.org petition, and within 24 hours, 100 people signed. Seeing the need for menstrual education pushed me to keep going. Event after event, post after post, our movement grew. I had no clue how the legislature worked, but that didn’t stop me. On New Year’s Eve, I wished for the Know Your Period bill to pass. Soon, with over 750 signatures, AB 2229 was introduced. But what made our bill special was the movement behind it. We put faces behind the statistics, sharing stories that mattered. On April 3rd, after waiting over 6 HOURS at the CA State Capitol, I testified alongside Lili Stukas and Lori D Wilson. The unanimous support showed this bill was more than just text—it was a reflection of our stories. We faced obstacles, but each challenge only strengthened our resolve. And now, AB 2229 is CALIFORNIA LAW! Students will receive comprehensive menstrual education, and what began as an idea is now reality. Now, Californians will KNOW THEIR PERIOD! #knowyourperiod

Even if they can't vote, our youngest generations are taking alternative actions to shape their country. They understand and care about the future of democracy, and are protesting en mass to ensure their voices will be heard. IGNITE is honored that organizations like Grantmakers for Girls of Color (GM4GC) have continued to invest and support our work as we mobilize and educate the next generation of political advocates. Read the full piece from GM4GC'S Maheen Kaleem on why we need to invest in our youth below- https://lnkd.in/g7zmePgR
