Enhancing quality of life through transportation
About us
The state transportation system is inextricably woven into the fabric of Idaho life. The state's citizens use Idaho's transportation system to get to work, school, friends and recreation. They also rely on that system to bring goods to their stores, services to their doorstep, and to make sure the state's goods and services are delivered to the customers of the nation and the world. From the food they eat, to the letters they read, to the movies they drive to, Idahoans are empowered by transportation in complex and substantial ways. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has many opportunities for work variety and specialization. There are many careers to pursue at ITD including Engineering, Finance and Accounting, Human Resources, and more. Working for ITD includes a competitive benefits package as well as an excellent work life balance with options such as flex time. Working with ITD can be a lifetime career choice with the opportunity for growth and advancement. Contact an ITD Recruiter at: [email protected] or call 208-334-8664 .

Election season is here, and if you’re placing signs along Idaho highways, remember to keep safety first! Always post signs outside the right-of-way (ROW), which includes shoulders and drainage areas. Signs in the ROW can block sightlines, distract drivers, and interfere with maintenance. Use fences or power poles as guides—don’t place signs between them and the highway. And don’t forget to ask permission before posting on private property. Help us keep our highways safe and follow these simple guidelines when posting temporary signs.

When you see the ITD logo, you might think of construction or snow removal—but there's so much more behind it. We're often the first responders when emergencies happen—whether it's a car accident, a roadside breakdown, or even a plane crash. This summer, when two crop duster planes collided near US-26, our striping crew was working that road and became first on the scene to assess the pilots' condition. And when a motorcycle crashed on I-15, our maintenance crew was already there, helping before anyone else could arrive. Our teams are on the road every day, not just to keep them safe but to ensure you are too. We work alongside police, paramedics, and emergency responders to make sure that we're doing all we can to get help on the way, run traffic control, or lend a hand in any way. From minor incidents to life-threatening emergencies, we're there because we care about the communities we live in. When you see us out there, remember that we're not just road workers or the ones causing delays. We're neighbors, family members, and friends, looking out for you on Idaho's roads. Stay safe and please, be patient and respectful when you see our crews. They may just be the ones to help before anyone else can.

There's interesting details in a lot of what we do- things you might never notice! The steel drum rollers that we use after paving expel a combination of water and degreaser as they work. This keeps the asphalt from sticking to the drum or tires so the road can be compacted for the best possible performance, and traffic can get travelling over the new pavement faster. 😎🚗

One of the many projects happening along State Highway 55 is hazerdoues tree removal! This week, we began removing around 1,000 potentially hazardous trees along a ten-mile stretch north of Banks. These dying and diseased trees are being cleared so we can boost driver safety, improve wildlife visibility, and create better fire protection zones. The project will take about six weeks, with traffic reduced to a single lane where the work is happening—but don’t worry, we’ll keep weekends clear! Expect some delays, so plan ahead and make your trip as smooth as possible by checking 511.idaho.gov.
