Today, I shared a message with ICMA members in my role as ICMA President. I am posting a shortened version here: As the Southeast Region faces the challenges brought by yet another hurricane, I want to take a moment, on behalf of the ICMA Executive Board, to recognize the extraordinary work of our city and county managers who are leading the charge in preparing for and responding to these natural disasters. Your efforts, under extremely difficult circumstances, are a testament to the professionalism, dedication, and resilience of local government leadership. It is also recognized that there is simultaneous stress and sacrifice these situations are placing on your own families. At ICMA, we understand the weight of the responsibility you carry to ensure the safety and well-being of your communities. You are the first line of defense during times of crisis. The leadership you demonstrate in these critical moments—to coordinate emergency response plans; to communicate with residents; and to engage with federal, state, and nonprofit partners—not only safeguards the people and businesses of your community, but it also strengthens their trust and confidence in local government. The recovery process is long, requiring strategic planning, collaboration, and unwavering commitment to the future of your community. So, please know that ICMA stands with you in these challenging times. We are here to offer support, share resources, and connect you with peers who have faced similar challenges. This week, ICMA staff established a Hurricane Recovery Action Team, spearheaded by Amber Snowden and supported by Randy Reid (Southeast regional director) and several other key personnel. This group will develop content to support members in their response to these most recent natural disasters. Currently, they have curated a list of Hurricane Recovery Resources to support recovery efforts. Also listed are various agencies that are currently accepting donations that will be directed to personally impacted public employees in their time of need. The Action Team has also created its first podcast, Disaster Recovery, which covers the local government and the city/county manager's role in emergency and disaster response and recovery. The Team is also researching potential grant and technical assistance, engaging with FEMA and state emergency management organizations to keep members informed about opportunities and requirements from the federal and state level. As with any emergency situation, conditions on the ground can change rapidly. So, if you have any suggestions on issues that need to be addressed, email [email protected] or reply to this email. Please know that you are not alone. The ICMA community is a strong and united network, and we encourage you to reach out to fellow managers to exchange ideas, identify solutions, and to offer the emotional support that comes from engaging with others who truly understand the burden this job can bring at times.
