Insight is the intersection between data and perspective. Each year, our partners at FireRescue1 (Lexipol) publish a unique resource that brings that intersection to life for fire service leaders: the What Firefighters Want report. This report ties broad industry trends to the perspectives that fuel them by utilizing both quantifiable data (such as national recruitment and retention averages) and the qualified perspectives of firefighters from all over the U.S. and Canada. The results are then analyzed, summarized, and synthesized into a single document that not only advises fire service leaders on their policies and approaches, but connects them to the lived experiences of the men and women they serve. The IAFC is proud to join FireRescue1 and its partners in the development of this annual report. The 2024 edition provides leaders with stark, honest insight into the perspectives shared by many of their current personnel. Firefighters who answered the 2024 survey expressed concerns about poor leadership's impact on retention, morale, and the sustainability of the service itself, and they provided sincere feedback on how leaders can adapt their strategies to better serve the workforce in 2025. Examples of strong leadership were also highlighted and analyzed, offering valuable insight into best practices in areas like policy development, internal communications, recruitment programming, outreach, conflict management, career planning, and more. You can download your free digital copy of What Firefighters Want in 2024 here:

Today is National First Responders Day. From The White House: Our first responders represent the best of who we are as a people. They are the police officers and sheriff's deputies who answer our calls, ready to help, no matter the situation. They are the firefighters running toward the flames to protect our communities. They are emergency medical technicians, paramedics, 911 dispatchers, 988 crisis responders, and all the medical professionals providing emergency care, who sacrifice so much to be there for us when a crisis hits. Our first responders are everyday heroes, and we are so grateful for their service. In the wake of Hurricane Milton and Hurricane Helene, we witnessed the courage and bravery of our first responders firsthand and just how much they sacrifice to keep the rest of us safe, including the brave search and rescue teams who have saved thousands of lives in the aftermath of the storms.
