About us
The Hunger Solutions Institute (HSI) was established by the College of Human Sciences and the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station at Auburn University in February 2012 in an effort to further Auburn’s nationally recognized efforts in food security domestically and globally. A foundational principle of the HSI is that hunger is a solvable problem, but only when the relevant knowledge from all academic disciplines is combined with the abilities and strengths of all sectors. By creating multi-sector partnerships at the community, state and global levels, HSI shares knowledge and best practices and creates multi-sector coalitions to leverage the power of collective action.

Professor Veena Chattaraman brings her creativity and scientific expertise to research focused on consumer and health technologies. She aims to reduce older adults’ barriers to using AI and improve rural communities’ access to health and nutrition information through AI-powered technologies. She is collaborating with the Hunger Solutions Institute to identify rural retailers that could be partners across Alabama. The Institute provides economic incentives to SNAP eligible consumers through its Nutrition Incentive Program. Chattaraman hopes to amplify these economic incentives by implementing information nudges through a novel, store-based digital channel. “We want to be able to design messages in a way that matches consumers’ health goals, so they are more likely to take action on them,” she said. “We also want to leverage the power of generative AI in exploring how rural grocery retailers can use this resource-efficient technology to promote healthier choices in their stores.” To learn more, visit: https://lnkd.in/gf6CnZgR

HSI is at the Global Produce and Floral Show this week! We’re excited to learn from experts in the industry about the current science, needs, and opportunities to connect more households with fresh fruits and vegetables. Fun fact: The fruits and veggies left over from the conference and expo will be donated to the Atlanta community food bank. They’re expecting 10+ tractor-trailer truckloads of produce that will help feed thousands of families in the area!

USDA recently announced $1.2 billion to support local food purchases for food banks, schools, and child care facilities. This funding builds on USDA’s Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program (LFPA) and Local Food for Schools Cooperative Agreement Program (LFS), which were created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Continued investment in local purchasing will allow producers to expand, invest in infrastructure, and solidify new connections that support resilient regional food systems while providing healthy products to food recipients.
