This past weekend, Hughes Marino hosted an Arts+Culture Series event at The Stuart Collection at UCSD for clients wanting to get further engaged in San Diego’s regional rich cultural offerings. Jessica Berlanga Taylor, Director and Curator of The Stuart Collection, led our group of Southern California business leaders and executives through a private tour of almost half of the over 20 installations on campus. This was an incredible opportunity to share the culture and work done by many talented artists, accompanied by detailed and insightful storytelling by Jessica. We’re grateful to have this collection of art and culture in our own backyard, featured within the UCSD campus.

One of our favorite books at Hughes Marino, Will it Make the Boat Go Faster?, written by British Olympic gold medalist rower, Ben Hunt-Davis MBE, shares the inspiring story of his team’s path from merely participating in the international circuit, to reaching the utmost pinnacle of success on the world’s stage. To end up winning their gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Olympics, the British rowing team became ruthlessly focused on a singular and profound goal: making their boat go faster. They relentlessly pursued that purpose and questioned everything they did in the process. They scrutinized every minute detail, looking for ways they could make their boat go faster, and at the same time, eliminating anything that didn’t make the boat go faster. Recently, our team was fortunate to learn firsthand from Ben on how he has distilled those learnings into a framework that anyone—and every team and company, no matter the industry—can apply to their personal and professional lives. We encourage you to check out four of the most valuable takeaways we learned from Ben, and are applying daily as a team at Hughes Marino. Check them out in our latest edition of Work+Space Magazine: The Inspiration Issue!

We’re proud to share that amongst our incredible team of outstanding athletes, Los Angeles Managing Director Sean Spear and Seattle VP Kevin Hogan will be competing in the Berlin Marathon in less than two weeks. This bucket list item is soon becoming a reality, after months and years of training, competing and preparing. Entering this race has also provided them the opportunity to support amazing organizations of their choosing. Sean is supporting the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) to raise money and awareness for their cause. NDSS empowers people with Down syndrome and their families through policy change, resources and community engagement. Kevin is running on behalf of Tuesday's Children, a remarkable organization dedicated to supporting those impacted by terrorism and traumatic loss. We applaud Sean and Kevin in challenging themselves to fulfill their goal of participating in the Berlin Marathon, while additionally supporting causes that create positive impact in our communities.
