This month we highlight Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Awareness. Did you know that sudden infant death is the leading cause of death for infants between one - four months of age in the United States? The number of deaths has decreased significantly since the launch of the Safe Sleep initiative in 1994. When infants are placed on their stomachs to sleep, overheating can occur. They also rebreathe exhaled air which has more carbon dioxide and less oxygen causing too little oxygen in the infant's body. Temporary changes in the heart and lung function could affect the amount of oxygen getting to the brain. What does safe sleep look like? Placing the infant on their back, on a firm, flat and level surface. It isn't recommended to use any crib bumpers, blankets or soft toys in the infant sleep space. Please check this link for additional information on Sudden Infant Death Awareness and prevention: http://spr.ly/6046UpsqK Please tune in below for the monthly message from our Executive Director for Maternal Health, Rose L. It's #NewbornScreeningAwareness Month! Newborn screening is a public health service for the ~ 4million babies born in the US each year. The screening occurs within 1 to 2 days of birth and will test for over 29 diseases. The goal of #newbornscreening tests is for early detection and intervention. It is important to note that about 1 in 4 babies are born with a critical congenital heart defect. It is estimated that 6,000 babies are born in the U.S. with hearing outside the typical range. The World Health Organization (WHO) has a global target to increase breastfeeding rates to 50% by 2025. Breastfeeding has many benefits for the infant and mother. Human milk has everything a newborn needs, including micro and macronutrients, immunoglobulins, hormones, stem cells, growth factors, antimicrobial agents, immune cells, cytokines, and prebiotic bacteria. Many hospitals have embraced the 10 steps to successful breastfeeding.
