Huddle Up

Yesterday, I met Spider-Man. He came to my house with his mother for trick-or-treating, and while other kids whizzed by, he focused carefully on each step up to our candy bowl. He was mindful of how his costume clung to his legs, the scratchy tag at his neck, and protecting himself from the loud noises around him. His mom knelt beside him at the bowl, gently encouraging him to sign “thank you.” We sat together as he found his perfect piece of candy, then signed “thank you” with a big smile, rocking back and forth in celebration. His mother shared excitably that this was something they were working on. This young Spider-Man stayed with me—not because he has nonverbal autism, but because of his mother’s advocacy, patience, and his joy in successfully communicating. It reminded me of the vital role our therapists and employees at Huddle Up play each day—from direct therapy services to supporting educators and school staff. Our Family Care Hub is designed to help bridge that connection, supporting not only a child’s ability to communicate but also our ability to understand how they communicate.
