  • “PAs are dedicated and patient-focused medical professionals that provide exceptional care. Being a PA means having a career that is challenging, emphasizes the importance of teamwork, and enables you to work in a constantly changing environment where adaptability is essential for success. I have always had an interest in working in the field of orthopedics. I played soccer for 10 years and have seen several sports injuries on and off the field, which resulted in me working at a physical therapy office to gain hands-on patient care for PA school. There, I gained valuable experience in the healing process of musculoskeletal injuries. My mother had been a patient of Dr. [Michael] Maynard’s for six years at HSS, and I was extremely impressed with her quality of care. The PAs that took care of my mother were my first introduction to this profession and I went to PA school with the goal of working at HSS, which has become my second home. Being a PA has taught me the qualities of compassion, empathy, and honesty that are necessary for a career at HSS. I am a Core PA, which means I get to be an integral member of all the services HSS has to offer. I love the versatility of my role, from doing history and physicals on patients in holding, being in the operating room, to seeing patients for their post operative assessments, plus so much more. Each day is different, sometimes even going from spine to limb lengthening to sports all in the same day. One of the best parts of my role is being able to work with an amazing team. There is something magical about the ease in which HSS employees operate so seamlessly together.” - Jessica Jimenez, PA-C #PAWeek

  • “Being a PA means being a flexible and adaptable member of the healthcare team. Since the inception of the profession in 1967, we have become a vital part of American healthcare system. We fill many roles in almost every medical specialty and have become an invaluable resource for both patients and physicians. I've always been interested in the sciences and knew that I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare at a young age. Prior to becoming a PA, I worked as a certified athletic trainer (ATC) and grew to enjoy diagnosing and treating basic sports injuries. I wanted to take my scope of practice a step further and the PA profession offered everything that I was looking for – a wider breadth of medical knowledge, first assisting in surgery, and playing a more comprehensive role in patient care. I’ve worked in other hospital systems and haven’t seen an organization where PAs are woven so tightly in the fabric of operations. We interact with patients in every phase of their care and have support from administration and the physician/surgeon staff to work at the top of our license to provide the best care for our patients. I really enjoy being involved in patient care from start to finish. I see patients at their first consultation visit for their hip/knee issue, will oftentimes be directly involved in their surgical procedure, and follow them afterward for post-operative care. Hearing how much better they feel after surgery and seeing their progression is the most rewarding aspect of my job. HSS has really built a great working space for PAs. We have a solid onboarding program, serial lectures from a multitude of different healthcare professionals, and access to a cadaver lab. These programs help to empower PAs to provide the best care possible for our patients.” - Jamar Brown, PA-C #PAWeek

  • “To me, being a PA means being there to help my patients through the surgical journey. It also means being an integral part of a team - often being the liaison between patient and surgeon, working within the OR or clinical team to make sure we are all on the same page to optimize patient care. I was driven to this career after being a patient at HSS during college. I underwent multiple surgeries due to sports-related injuries and remember the care I received from my PA (thank you, Keith Williamson) and knowing I was in good hands. I often doubted my recovery and if I would ever play again and Keith was the calming voice I needed for reassurance. This was my first real experience with a PA and it really opened my eyes to the role of a PA in the medical field. I was then afforded the opportunity to shadow that practice through my university and I was constantly drawn to the PA role. Being a PA at HSS means I can give back to my patients and care for my patients the same way I was cared for. Being a patient can be scary and intimidating and it's a great feeling being able to guide patients through such an overwhelming process. It's a great feeling to give the best care at the best orthopedic hospital. I love coming to work every day and interacting with my team and my coworkers. Some of my best friends are my fellow PAs, nurses, techs, and of course, my boss.” - Catie De Sito, PA-C #PAWeek

  • “Being a PA means playing the role of a key team member in the care of a patient. It means having a multitude of skillsets: being able to diagnose, being able to educate, being a good teammate in the operating room, bringing a different perspective to the team and thinking outside the box. To me I take great pride in providing my patients with education so not only can I offer them treatment but my thought process behind why we make certain recommendations to help them best understand what is going on with their body. I was attracted to the flexibility the career provides. I am qualified for every specialty and have the ability to work in many different environments - outpatient, operating room, inpatient care. Being a PA at HSS is special. To me it means working alongside the best of the best and collectively creating the best institution in the world. It's a pleasure working here and that is because everyone here is bought into helping each other to create the best environment for patient care. It is very unique to be a part of this amazing institution. I enjoy my team. I work in Spine alongside Dr. James Dowdell. Together, along with our office manager, we provide what I think is great care for our patients. We take the time to explain their issue and how we can help them. We always do what we think is best for their specific problems and goals. Sometimes this is surgical and sometimes it is with more conservative treatment. I see patients full circle: outpatient, assist in surgery, and follow them post-operatively, which is really nice.” - Zachary Levy, PA-C #PAWeek

  • "Being a PA means being a part of an interdisciplinary team to provide quality care to patients. We conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, and order and interpret diagnostic tests. Additionally, we counsel patients on preventative health care, assist in surgery, and write prescriptions. Our training equips us to work in a range of specialties and surgical practices making us incredibly flexible team members. I started my career at HSS about 10 years ago where I began working as an office clerk, then medical secretary and subsequently, surgical coordinator at Dr. Mathias Bostrom’s office. Under his mentorship and after shadowing his private PA, I quickly realized that I was fascinated by the intricacies of the human body and that medicine was my passion. I then decided to enroll back into school to begin my journey to becoming a PA. Shortly after graduating from PA school, I was given the amazing opportunity to return to HSS as Dr. Bostrom’s private PA. As an arthroplasty orthopedic surgery PA at HSS, I am committed to providing the highest quality of care to all my patients, improving their mobility, showing compassion to patients, and constantly educating myself on new evidence-based medicine that can be utilized peri-operatively. What I love most about being a PA at HSS is the continuity of care that is established with my patients. I see patients for their initial consultations, first assist in their primary and complex joint replacement surgeries, and then am finally able to see their post-operative recovery. This continuity of care makes being a PA an invaluable experience. I see patients go from a debilitated state pre-operatively to then a few months later witnessing them regain a sense of self, independence, and pain free living. Every day I come into work excited and motivated to learn. My patients continue to humble me and teach me how to become a better provider and overall person. I am honored and privileged to be a PA at HSS and am grateful for the opportunities that were provided to me to advance my professional career from when I started at HSS just 10 years ago." - Kimberly Morales, MHS, PA-C #PAWeek
