…it’s my birthday! (that’s what she told the volunteers at Hope Vibes Triad on serve day last Sunday). …three simple words, accompanied by a huge smile! …even up until now I don’t know if she was happy to see us, happy that we were bringing her a hygiene pack, toilet paper, water and a snack…again on this particular day, or that she just chose to proclaim a beautiful truth to her audience. That on that day, Sunday, she was celebrating her arrival to the world! …maybe all of the above! …miss Deborah was born as a beautiful unique design from our Maker, how many ever years she was born ago! …miss Deborah said it loud as we began to pull up, and pull out all the donations we had to give to our unhoused neighbors. I quickly looked to Migdalia and humbly asked her to sing “Happy Birthday”, and without skipping a beat (my wife is sharp y’all) she began to sing! I too, joined in a bit at the end, just to harmonize…!!!😅 …after the song miss Deborah couldn’t help but to express how beautiful my wife’s voice is! (She just smiled at me.) …it dawned on me how special it is even to just sing to someone on their birthday! …this past season of birthdays (we had 4 in a month and a half!) I was confronted about something hidden in my past. Because of the many scars of divorce, separation, and loss as a kid, I hadn’t realized how much I would miss for the first time ever not having all the Basilio’s in the same house on my birthday. We did zoom all together and they made it very special in ❤️ every way they could!! But it took me a few days after to realize how I still have pain from the past trapped inside my heart. …to make someone feel special you don’t need to have money, gifts, or all the answers, you don’t even need to know how to sing…(remember she smiled at me). People need presence, connection, a hug, a smile, an acknowledgement that they matter, that they are special too! …someone today may need a song, a smile, a friendly word, or a touch from you. Don’t get so locked in to the things you didn’t receive that you withhold something that can bring joy to the human being in front of you. You never know how it may help reveal and begin to heal something broken inside. We were created to be in community! Our unhoused neighbors are one of the most neglected people on the planet, it doesn’t have to be this way. Serve with us sometime, it will change you. I promise! This dude had us up buying trucks (yes another one) early this morning before I was fully awake… and my half opened eyes tell the story lol 😌😂. Never would have guessed that we’d have the opportunity to do the things we do. Buying #boxtrucks to build #HopeTanks so that people experiencing #homelessness can take showers and wash their clothes is still just wild to me! I was talking about operating from a place of familiarity a few days ago. And while thinking about what we’ve been graced to do for the past 7 years today, I realized that we can also become too “familiar” with ourselves and the work entrusted into our care. Let this be your reminder today that your call and your impact is significant. It may have become your “norm” or just a common thing to you… but to those who are beneficiaries of who you are and what you do, we can affirm that you and the work of your hands are necessary and appreciated. Celebrate your wins, big and small… Honor God who is moving through you… and keep pressing forward in your assignment(s). Love you.
