At Honor, we think about online learning as more than just the transfer of knowledge. We think of it as an active experience that deepens engagement by: ❗ Encouraging students to react to material and share with their peers as they’re learning. 📊 Tracking progress to ensure learners are actively engaging with the material, not just going through the motions. ✍️ Building in prompts and check ins throughout learning material to support comprehension. And it's working! 94% of instructors said that Honor improved student engagement in their course.

Every room has its own unique energy. Whether a sporting event, concert, or live debate, the energy can be the very thing that makes the experience so memorable and exhilarating. Everyday events also have energy, especially learning spaces. In a classroom, you can feel the energy shift from lively discussion to quiet confusion, and on to that “aha” moment learners get when grasping a difficult concept. Unfortunately, when learning moves online, classroom energy is often the first thing to go, leaving learners with a flattened, less engaging experience. Let’s change that.   Honor CEO Joel Podolny sat down with Alex Sarlin at Edtech Insiders to share how we’re thinking about online education, and how we’re infusing energy back into the learning experience. We’re Honored to support the TESSI Institute in collaboration with Lehigh University! This partnership embodies our core ethos: That online learning can be just as immersive and collaborative as classroom learning with the added benefit of reaching students across the globe. 🌏

How might we prepare college students to leverage science, technology, and innovation to drive transformative social impact? Vini Jaiswal, Diya P. Pandey, Mahir Ashab Enan, and Ibtihal Gassem believe that the Humanitarian Design & Social Enterprise (HDSE) Summer School offers a powerful approach to achieving this goal. During an intensive three-week fieldwork period, this team collaborated with Agastya International Foundation staff and Lehigh University faculty, Saif Mir and Khanjan Mehta to deliver a four-day immersive workshop to a cohort of self-selected student leaders with a rich history of community engagement and social innovation. This immersive experience, akin to an extended hackathon, built on the principles of Creative Inquiry, Humanitarian Design, and Social Innovation to equip students with the skillsets, mindsets, and toolkits necessary to identify opportunities and take collaborative action to address important societal challenges. Complementing the Transformative Education for Sustainable Social Impact (TESSI) Institute for faculty members, HDSE is a student-driven initiative, designed for students by students. Working with 28 students and 4 Agastya ignitors, the participants were divided into teams of four, each tasked with developing specific projects aimed at addressing one of five Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Zero Hunger, Good Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities, and Clean Water and Sanitation.  Over the first three days, participants underwent extensive training in core social innovation and enterprise development principles which they applied to their own projects. On the final day, they presented their innovative solutions before a panel of judges, including Agastya’s Chief Operations Officer, Sai Chandrashekhar. During the HDSE Summer School, the team further refined the highly-interactive app-based curriculum that they have developed in collaboration with the Lehigh Universal Design for Inquiry (LUDI) team (Xiangyu Hu, Doug Lesson, William Gaudelli) and Honor Education (Shadee Barkan, Joel Podolny, Jeremy Dean, PhD). This curriculum and learning resources were shared with ~30 faculty members from across India convened by the Indo Universal Collaboration for Engineering Education ( IUCEE ) for a four-day TESSI Institute. Faculty feedback is currently being utilized to enhance the online course, which will soon be launched to students in India, the Philippines, Colombia, and other countries. The goal is to engage 10,000 active learners by December 2024. Special thanks to Ramji Raghavan, CEO and founder of Agastya International Foundation for hosting the HDSE Summer School on their campus and Shrishail Dhanawade, Natesh Appaya, Mahesh B, and the entire Agastya team for their tireless support.

Pooja Brown, our Chief Product & Technology Officer, recently spoke at #PlatoElevate that brought together over a 1,000 attendees to hear and learn from executives from many of the best run engineering teams in tech. Having built teams in early stage, mid-stage, and large established companies, Pooja’s session focused on Right-Sizing Your High Availability Investment. She shared how tech leaders — regardless of size and stage — should optimize their resources while ensuring that if something breaks down, it’s addressed quickly and with minimal impact to the customer. At Honor, we not only appreciate her philosophy but are fortunate to see it in action with her team every day, giving learners the confidence that they can reliably access their materials from any device whenever and wherever learning happens. Every. Single. Day.

As recent graduates prepare for their next adventure, we’ve found that some of the best parts of the educational journey—community, equal voice, and belonging—also reflect what this new generation is seeking from employers as they prepare to enter the workforce. As more graduates have become comfortable with online learning and look to employers for continued development, it’s a real opportunity for all learning spaces to move beyond a simple transfer of information, and become spaces that foster community, equal voice, and belonging. The following article captures what these digital natives value: 🤝 Teamwork and working collaboratively in all environments, particularly the digital space. 🗣️ Having their voices heard and sharing ideas on how to do things differently. ❤️ They seek trust, authenticity, honesty, and openness from their colleagues and employers. I had the honor (see what I did there) of catching up with Joel Podolny from Honor Education while at the ASU+GSV Summit in San Diego earlier this month. In Adirondack chairs in a courtyard behind the Grand Hyatt on a bright and sunny Tuesday morning, Joel shared his fascinating background and how it factors into his vision for Honor in this age of AI. Describing a human-centered, mobile-first learning experience informed by his tenure at Apple University, Joel provides a compelling view of how learning platforms can drive collective engagement and how AI might factor into the equation. 💡🤔 🚀 Links to the episode of Trending In Education are in the Comments. 👇👇👇 Subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and let us know what you think. #MobileLearning #ProfessionalDevelopment #OrganizationalCulture #WorkplaceTraining #ContinuousLearning #MobileFirst #LearningPlatforms #EmployeeEngagement #Microlearning #LearningExperiences #CorporateTraining #SkillsDevelopment #TalentDevelopment #LifelongLearning #LearningStrategies #ELearningTrends #LearningApps #LearningTechnology #HigherEdInnovation #DigitalTransformation
