2024 marks the fifth year of our partnership with the Miami Dolphins and Hard Rock Stadium's #FootballUNITES program! Through this collaboration, HistoryMiami offers enriching cultural tours, providing local youth with the opportunity to explore the diverse cultures of South Florida. • In Little Havana, we visited the Bay of Pigs Museum and Library, the iconic Domino Park, and concluded the day with treats from Los Pinarenos Fruteria, Azucar Ice Cream, Party Cake Bakery, and Old’s Havana. • In Little Haiti, we enjoyed a painting workshop with muralist and sign artist Serge Toussaint, learned to dance konpa, and enjoyed a delicious lunch from Naomi’s Garden. • In South Beach, we explored the Art Deco Museum and the Jewish Museum of Florida. • In Overtown, we helped maintain the Overtown Community Garden, visited the Historic Lyric Theater, and wrapped up the day with lunch from Jackson Soul Food at The Historic Ward Rooming House. We’re thrilled to continue this meaningful partnership, fostering a love for South Florida and its many cultures. — ¡2024 marca el quinto año de nuestra asociación con el programa Football UNITES de Miami Dolphins! We are deeply saddened by the passing of Merett Stierheim (pictured left), a dedicated public servant who made significant contributions to our community. Several years ago, he shared his inspiring Miami Story with the museum, recounting his journey to South Florida and his unwavering commitment to public service over the decades. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones during this difficult time. "Now, 52 years later, I appreciate how important it proved to be for my working destiny, to say nothing of its impact on my entire life. It was the beginning of what has proven to be a wonderful, exciting and challenging journey in public service. I’ve always felt very fortunate to serve my fellow citizens during good times and challenging times, and I am particularly proud to call Miami my home." https://lnkd.in/eVArYucc Image: Merett Stierheim, Mayor Francis Suarez, and former Museum Director Jorge Zamanillo at HistoryMiami’s 2018 Flamingo Ball.

This week, our team visited the Miami-Dade County Advocacy Advisory Board offices to collect their Miami Stories. Groups in these offices include the Asian-American Advisory Board, Commission for Women, Interfaith Advisory Board, and more. We are thrilled to be adding these stories to our archives as part of our ongoing Miami Stories project. Established in 2009, this initiative collects stories about Miami’s past, present, and future. Through this oral history project, we document life in South Florida through both written submissions and audio recordings, which are preserved in the museum’s archive and shared online. To learn more about our Miami Stories project, or to submit your own story, visit https://lnkd.in/eRRyPy_p

Over the weekend, HistoryMiami collaborated with Carlos Muñoz, our Photography Fellow, to complete the last stages of an online exhibition developed in conjunction with youth participants. The youth actively engaged in the editing phase, which will eventually culminate in an online showcase of their work. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our partners at Miami Dade College Homestead Campus for graciously granting us access to their classrooms and computer labs to advance this endeavor.
