Presidential Comebacks: Comparing Trump (2024) to Cleveland (1892) Successful presidential comebacks is rare. In fact, so rare that we've only had one: Grover Cleveland in 1892. To be sure, other former presidents have contemplated it and even tried it (Theodore Roosevelt in 1912). In fact, Cleveland is America's only president to serve two non-consecutive terms. He was our 22nd (1885-89) and 24th (1893-97) president. In 1892, Grover Cleveland defeated the Benjamin Harrison - the Republican who had defeated him in 1888. If President Joe Biden had not dropped out of race, the 2024 presidential race would have had one significant similarity to the 1892 presidential race: a sitting president versus a former president. But even though Mr. Biden did drop out, the 1892 and 2024 presidential elections still have one significant similar in that a former president is seeking a return to the White House - a potential presidential comeback similar to Cleveland. In this interview we discuss the difference between the two presidential comebacks: Grover Cleveland in 1892 and Donald Trump in 2024. How are these two former presidents different?
