Creative Director, Richard Nelson here. 👋 I was pleased and honored to attend the Project Osmosis 25th Anniversary Gala on Oct 25 in Chicago. Project Osmosis is a Chicago-based design education initiative which strives to foster the development of young creatives of color and support and guide them into the field of applied arts and graphic design.    My long-time friend and fellow SAIC alum, Vernon Lockhart, spearheaded the formation of the organization and serves as the Executive Director. When Vernon and I began our pursuit of graphic design we were fortunate enough to have supportive friends, relatives and teachers who understood that design could be a viable career path and encouraged us to stay on course. Along the way we have discovered that we are a minority in this wonderful field. According to a 2019 survey, only 3% of graphic designers in the US are African American.    Project Osmosis aims to impact that statistic by means of community outreach programs and providing resources that expose young people of color to the world of design and educating them in ways they can focus their creative energies. The hope and goal is that they will continue to pursue a career in design.    The Gala was a testament to the enduring value and contributions of Project Osmosis and those who have supported it over the years. The evening also reminded us that while we celebrate the accomplishments of the last 25 years there is still much work to do. 🎨 Frontify's comprehensive guide to effective brand building reveals that the biggest obstacle to creativity is often organizational, not a lack of ideas. Interestingly, 70% of Creative Directors cite lack of time as the main barrier to memorable creative output. The checklist provided in the article stresses the importance of regular brand audits for maintaining relevance and consistency. It also highlights the necessity of effective Digital Asset Management for efficient workflows. The guide suggests that thoughtful use of templates and AI can enhance creativity by saving time on routine tasks. #CreativeDirector #BrandBuilding #Creativity #DesignManagement

🤖 🎬 Richard Nelson Nelson, our Creative Director, offers his insights on science fiction cinema's influence on real-world technology: "I’ve always been fascinated with science fiction cinema, in particular, how filmmakers envisioned and designed the look of the future. Oftentimes these visions were far-fetched and fanciful but at other times they seemed almost prophetic in their plausibility. An early example would be George Pal’s “Destination Moon” (1950) which presented an attempt at a technically realistic mission to the moon which would not be far removed from the actual thing over a decade and a half later. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001 (1968) featured an artificially intelligent computer overseeing a huge spacecraft piloted by astronauts who used flat screen tablets eerily similar to iPads. Star Trek’s (1966) communicators would become the flip phones of the ‘90s. Thoughtful future design often seems to foreshadow reality.    Director Alex Proyas, who made the 2005 movie I, Robot, jabs at Elon Musk’s autonomous vehicles and humanoid robots in a recent post on Musk’s own X platform stating, "Hey Elon, Can I have my designs back please?". Whether meant as a serious indictment or as tongue-in cheek irony, he draws attention to the broadly similar designs of Musk’s latest creations to those in his film. Whatever the intent, this makes a point of how art appears to continue to shape the design of the tools and tech of our future and we love it." #tech #stem #scifi #design #future #technology #sciencefiction #film

🎨 🎧 Spotify's latest "Create Cover Art" feature allows users to personalize their playlists with custom designs. This tool empowers everyone, not just designers, to create unique visuals directly from their phones. As Anna Yu from our design team states, "As a long-term Spotify user, I have loved their design language and brand system and am always intrigued to see what they come up with for new features. This latest update ties in with the design experience, where it is easy for people, not just designers, to create something easy just on their phones." Gregory Bond adds, "Similar to products like Canva and Adobe Express, Spotify’s new Create Cover Art feature seems like a great, accessible tool for non-designers or beginner designers to dip their toes into the often intimidating world of design software. Additionally, in a world increasingly overrun by AI-produced assets, it’s refreshing and appreciated to see Spotify’s commitment to working with artists—consulting with graphic artists and musicians alike to create these fun and charming visuals for their beta product." Personalization and technology are reshaping user experiences. Read more below. #Personalization #Innovation #DesignTechnology #Spotify #UserExperience

Our director of operations, Amy LoVecchio shares her insights on NPR's recent article about libraries giving a leg up to entrepreneurs. 📚 "Libraries are under-appreciated powerhouses of knowledge in a world drowning in superficial fluff. They are treasure chests of free resources. Want to learn about UI/UX or coding? Check. Need a quiet place to brainstorm your next big idea? Double-check. Yes, it’s true that access can vary widely from one library to another, but many are making strides to provide equitable resources and support for all communities. These investments are transforming libraries into personal think tanks, all without the overhead costs of fancy co-working spaces. It’s like having an economic dev office in your backyard. They’re helping budding entrepreneurs gain skills and access resources that turn knowledge into economic growth. FOR FREE. They’ve also leveled up in the digital realm. They offer ebooks, audiobooks, and databases on repeat and they’re helping communities navigate this overwhelming digital landscape. While paid online resources are undeniably convenient, there’s something irreplaceable about the community engagement and diversity that libraries provide." 👏 Here’s a link to find your local library: Stay forever curious… https://lnkd.in/eV2732ru #library #libraries #entrepreneur #learning #knowledge #growth #innovation #resources #skills #accessibility #engagement #community

There is nothing like the energy that can be generated in a real life room, with a handful of supremely talented people, collaborating to solve problems. Zoom can’t replicate it — but it’s not just technology. An amazing lecture given by one person in a hall and regular workday meetings don’t replicate it either. For this electricity you need real connection, real problems, really, really talented people and a special kind of leadership. 💫 We were lucky enough to be in a room like that — with a group like that — earlier this month, and the energy it produced is still reverberating through us. We left inspired, invigorated and rocked by the notions of what is really possible. We also left with a book recommendation, “Organizing Genius: The Secrets of Creative Collaboration.” The book is partly a walk through history, partly a how-to manual, and partly an examination of why so few groups achieve breakthrough heights. The book isn’t new and the efforts and examples described have been going on for ages — but the mechanics of these types of groups may well be more relevant than ever today: “A shrinking world in which technological and political complexity increase at an accelerated rate offers fewer and fewer arenas in which individual action suffices...the most urgent projects require the coordinated contributions of many talented people. Whether the task is building a global business or discovering the mysteries of the human brain, one person can’t hope to accomplish it, however gifted or energetic her or she may be. There are simply too many problems to be identified and solved, too many connections to be made. And yet, even as we make the case for collaboration, we resist the idea of collective creativity. Our mythology refuses to catch up with our reality. We cling to the myth of the Lone Ranger, the romantic idea that great things are usually accomplished by a larger-than-life individual working alone... [But] the organizations of the future will increasingly depend on the creativity of their members to survive.” The human race itself may also depend upon the success of its collective creativity. So here’s a shout out to the Wellcome Leap team and their incredible (and incredibly ambitious) global work and vision, as well as to this gem of a book which you can find here:  https://lnkd.in/gemRMm43 #innovation #team #organizations #teamwork #collaboration #creativity #technology #goodreads #bookrecommendation

Did you know while women and girls make up half of the population, they receive less than 2% of all charitable giving in the U.S.? Ten years ago, our friend Holly Gordon co-founded Girl Rising — inspired by the documentary of the same name she co-produced — to address this disparity in the U.S. (and around the world). Since then the organization has made significant impact, developing a global generation of emerging female leaders, including Future Rising Fellows Dayana Blanco Quiroga and Charitie Ropati. Both have leveraged what has become known as Indigenous Science to bring back vital water sources in their Bolivian and Alaskan communities. We were honored to join Holly as well as so many other inspiring women, including Amita Vyas, to celebrate them and the future they create with an unwavering belief that anything is possible. Join us in making a contribution to and an impact in the life of one or several girls: https://www.girlrising.org #girlrising #femaleleaders #impact #indigenousscience #indigenouspeoplesday #inspiration
