Community-first mental health inside of video games, meeting young adults where they are
About us
At Hero Journey Club, we are dedicated to enhancing the social and emotional wellness of kids and young adults through interactive, engaging programs hosted in virtual gathering spaces like Minecraft. Our weekly group sessions focus on building resilience, empathy, and effective communication skills, providing a safe and supportive environment for young people to connect and grow. By leveraging the power of video games, we meet them where they already spend their time, offering a unique and effective approach to social and emotional learning. Our sessions are facilitated by highly qualified educators and professionals who are passionate about guiding youth on their journey to better emotional health and social well-being. We are creating the infrastructure for modern communities to thrive, providing the tools and support necessary for the next generation to build meaningful connections and achieve emotional wellness. We're currently hiring professionals experienced in social and emotional learning to facilitate our group sessions and help moderate our community events. "Creator-players on both Roblox and Minecraft identified creativity (70%), design (63%) and problem-solving (52%) as the top three skills they were developing on the platforms. The study also highlights that kids are increasingly seeing the monetary value in their creations: “Almost a quarter of Roblox Studio users ages 13 and under are [selling their creations] on the Roblox Marketplace.”" https://lnkd.in/e_U8qRRN #gamertherapy #mentalhealth

"Research shows that SSIs (single-session interventions) can meaningfully reduce depression and anxiety in teens, even months later — and the effects are only slightly smaller, on average, than those of traditional multi-session therapy. When offered as just-in-time tools within popular social media platforms like Tumblr and Discord, these programs reduce near-term ratings of hopelessness and self-hate and increase desires to stop self-harming, with effects considered large within the scientific community." https://lnkd.in/gybFfDa9

"Games like Animal Crossing, in which players have to build a town from scratch and whose popularity skyrocketed during the Covid-19 pandemic, can be beneficial for mental health, as various studies have shown. Others, like Minecraft, where users can build all kinds of structures with blocks, or Pokémon Go, which brought millions of kids onto the streets, are also mentioned." https://lnkd.in/ecQ-XfyC

Video games are often misunderstood. Gaming isn’t something we do to avoid responsibility — it’s something we do to enrich ourselves. A video game session can be an immersive act of self-care, especially if you pick up your controller with the intention of unwinding. It’s time to reconsider how we view video games. It’s undoubtedly fun to spend an hour here or there exploring a fantasy world, and these worlds have a wealth of mental and emotional enrichment to provide. #gamertherapy #mentalhealth

We take a science-backed approach to our in-game therapy sessions. While the first decade of video-game-related mental health research focused on the negative, recent studies point to a measurable connection between video games and lower levels of loneliness. Gaming can help folks everywhere who struggle with anxiety, depression, and social isolation, which is why we conduct all of our therapy sessions in-game. #gamertherapy #mentalhealth
