How does our neighborhood's history shape who we are today? Explore this and other questions at Come to the Table, a new conversation series rooted in the history of Henry Street Settlement and the Lower East Side. Kicking off this series, we’re thrilled to host Woodie King, Jr., founder of the New Federal Theatre—established at Henry Street in 1970 to feature the works of writers of color and women—in dialogue with Ali Rosa-Salas, Vice President of Visual and Performing Arts for Henry Street and its Abrons Arts Center. Seats are filling up for next Wednesday, October 9! Register now to join us over the noon hour in the historic Dining Room at 265 Henry Street. You're welcome to bring your lunch, and light refreshments will be provided. A note that the Dining Room is located up one flight of stairs. To RSVP, please contact Henry Street Public Historian Katie Vogel at [email protected] or 212.766.9200. We can’t wait to see you there!

Henry Street’s partners at the Corlears School Complex (Orchard Collegiate Academy, University Neighborhood Middle School, and Manhattan Charter School II) cut the ribbon on a beautiful new, earth-friendly schoolyard on September 26, 2024. A team of students worked with the Trust for Public Land to develop a plan for the new yard that includes trees, turf, pavers, and other green infrastructure that will capture over an inch of rainwater in storm events, making the Lower East Side more resilient against flooding. The yard was made possible through a partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Climate and Environmental Justice, Departments of Education and Environmental Protection, and NYC School Construction Authority (SCA), with major support from Nike and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, as well as New York City Councilmember Christopher Marte's office. “Every day, New York City children spend seven minutes of unstructured time outdoors, but seven hours on screens,” said Tamar Renaud of the Trust for Public Land. The new yard will encourage young people to enjoy the outdoors, socializing, playing sports, and having unfocused time to balance the hours they spend studying. On September 25, GameChanger presented a $25,000 grant from DICK'S Sporting Goods Foundation to support Henry Street’s Athletics and Community Engagement Services (A.C.E.S.). Henry Street was nominated for this award by Rachelle Jacques, senior manager of community impact, at GameChanger, a popular sports-streaming app owned by DICK’s. A big thank you to DICK’s Sporting Goods Foundation and GameChanger for their generous support! At the award event, Boy & Girls Republic basketball players held a scrimmage to honor DICK’s and GameChanger, whose former-athlete employees have volunteered several times at Henry Street over the past year, holding two sports-career networking events and basketball drills with teenagers. New York City has been facing a severe lifeguard shortage, with many New Yorkers are unable to afford the costs required for training. That’s why Henry Street Settlement, + POOL, and the Lower East Side Employment Network teamed up to offer FREE lifeguard training for New Yorkers ages 15 and older! During the spring and early summer, 64 students completed lifeguard training with our partners at Splash Fit and 95% are now certified lifeguards. An additional 48 swimmers attended skills courses to prep for the lifeguard test. Henry Street and LESEN are actively connecting program graduates to lifeguarding jobs. Interested in free or low-cost swimming lessons? Visit pluspool.com for more information about upcoming classes. To learn more about lifeguard employment opportunities, reach out to Henry Street or LESEN. #Lifeguard #NYC #SwimmingEducation

Honoring true pioneers of the Double Dutch world! The Fantastic 4 Double Dutch team, hailing from the Lower East Side, made history in 1980 when they became the Double Dutch world champions. At Henry Street’s Community Day on September 7, we proudly recognized these trailblazing women, just down the block from where they all met in junior high. Dolores Brown Finlayson, De’Shone Adams Goodson, Robin Oaks Watterson, and Adrienne “Nikki” Adams Howell received personalized awards from the Settlement, New York State Senate Proclamations from Assemblymembers Grace Lee and Harvey Epstein, and New York City Council Citations from Councilmembers Carlina Rivera and Christopher Marte. A well-deserved and long overdue tribute! Thank you to all our neighbors who joined us to celebrate. #LowerEastSide #DoubleDutch #NYCHistory

Today, Henry Street remembers and extends our ongoing sympathy to our team members and Lower East Side neighbors whose losses are still acutely felt from September 11, 2001. Though the years have passed, the loss remains a deeply personal experience for many, and our hearts are with all those still healing.
