HelpAge USA advances the rights and inclusion of older people around the world through research, advocacy, and programs.

About us

HelpAge USA works with our global network of affiliates and partners to implement programs and policies that improve the lives of older people in the world's poorest communities. We ensure that older people are included in international development and have access to emergency relief, income security, health services, and basic human rights. The HelpAge vision is of a world in which all older people fulfill their potential to lead dignified, active, healthy and secure lives. HelpAge is driven by a fundamental understanding that older people have the wisdom and the personal drive to contribute to their own well-being and to that of their families. We work globally to ensure that people everywhere understand how much older people contribute to society and that they must enjoy their right to healthcare, social services and economic and physical security. HelpAge International has six regional centers coordinating our work in Africa, East and South Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe/Central Asia. We work to address the issues that affect older people worldwide, including health, human rights, access to decent work and in emergencies. Since its inception in 1983, the HelpAge network has grown to over 100 affiliates and many more partners in 80+ countries across the world.

A round of applause for HelpAge’s own Carole Osero-Ageng'o, who was part of this important panel at the launch of The World Bank’s new report, Unlocking the Power of Healthy Longevity. Using examples from HelpAge’s work, she highlighted the critical role of community-based organizations in supporting the dignity and well-being of older people and the importance of thinking across the life course. As the global population ages, it's clear that healthy longevity impacts all of us. We must work together to build a future where everyone can thrive through all phases of life!

Longevity is a triumph of human endeavor and public policy. But are we fully prepared for its implications? With over one-third of the population in low and middle-income countries projected to be over 60 by the year 2050, we must address the challenges and opportunities that this rapid demographic shift presents. Today, we launched our new report: "Unlocking the Power of Healthy Longevity: Demographic Change, Non-communicable Diseases, and Human Capital." It's a wake-up call and a roadmap for the future. Key insights from the report: 1. Healthy longevity is about more than just living longer—it's about living better. It means reducing avoidable deaths and serious disabilities throughout life, improving physical, mental, and social functioning well into older age. 2. Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a critical challenge, accounting for over 70% of deaths in low- and middle-income countries. The poorest are most vulnerable, creating intergenerational poverty traps. 3. A life-course approach is essential, encompassing child nutrition, education, and policies like taxes on tobacco, alcohol, and sugary drinks. 4. Gender equity is crucial. While women generally outlive men, they face higher NCD burdens, longer periods of disability, and fewer resources to address these challenges. 5. The economic impact is significant. Done right, healthy longevity could save 150 million lives in low- and middle-income countries by 2050, yielding substantial economic benefits. This isn't just about the elderly—it's about all of us. Investing in human capital now promotes healthy longevity, creating a win-win for sustainable development. The World Bank Group is committed to supporting countries with knowledge, data, and financing to support healthy longevity. Our latest goal - reaching 1.5 billion people with better health services by 2030 - expands primary health care beyond maternal and child health to include services for preventing and treating non-communicable disease. Aging is an opportunity, not a burden. It's time to flip the narrative and embrace a holistic framework for healthier, more productive aging across the lifespan. Such an important example of the often overlooked contributions older people make, including in the midst of crises. Although older people can be disproportionately impacted by conflict-related abuses and face significant barriers to access humanitarian assistance, they are also frequently, crucially supporting others to survive and thrive. Programs across all sectors, including #ChildProtection, can save lives and reduce suffering by including #OlderPeople. HelpAge USA HelpAge International

In Armenia, members of our team recently met this 90-year old grandmother who is doing her best to care for her three orphaned grandchildren and a son with special needs. Regional conflict displaced them from their homes in September 2023, and the family has faced challenges in meeting their daily needs since then. Though neighbors helped with clothing, shoes, and other necessities, the family still struggled with putting food on the table. Thanks to food assistance from USAID partner World Food Programme, the grandmother, her son, and her grandchildren now receive food deliveries that make their lives a little easier amid numerous other challenges. Food is often the #1 need for families displaced by conflict, and USAID support in Armenia is helping this family and 30,000 other refugee households meet their daily needs during difficult times.

With support from HelpAge International, Action For Humanity - International stepped in to help 725 families in Al Haouz, providing critical winter relief to those in need—especially older adults, who are among the most at-risk in any crisis. One year later, the challenges remain. Older people in Morocco are still working to restore their lives, and the road to recovery is long. Watch this short video to see how your support is making a difference in their journey to heal and rebuild.
