The more I support education organizations advocating for AI policy, professional learning, and innovation, the more I wonder: *Are they actually leveraging AI internally?* Unsurprisingly, the answer is often a big NO. I faced this firsthand at the U.S. Department of Education—after releasing AI and the Future of Teaching & Learning, we were told we couldn’t use any AI tools ourselves. The reasons? Data privacy concerns, compliance, no precedence, fear of bias—the list goes on. But here’s the irony: if we’re serious about leveraging AI in education, we need to address these risks head-on in our own settings. How can we advocate for change if we’re too hesitant to explore these tools ourselves? How can organizations lead by example? How can they surface genuine concerns in constructive ways? How can they share this information with others?
