    This year has really been something else. I’ve been pretty quiet on social media the past 9 months so let me start by saying damn it feels good to be back! 😊 Here’s a taste of what’s been going on in 2024: 🎮 I founded a video game company back in January that was supposed to be a small side project but now has a team of 20 full-time artists, developers, and designers bringing my vision to life (across multiple countries – crazy). 🚀 Heller Agency has literally doubled in size since last fall, both in team and earnings. This includes investing in two C-level hires and 5+ new directors… as well as building out a wickedly-savvy scientific team and driving new trainings for everyone from the ground up. 🏡 I moved across the country from San Diego to South Carolina in late June and had about $10k in damages we could not recover (that one stung 💸). 👶 Continuing to juggle both businesses while raising a 2.5 and 1-year-old (while also donning the role of full-time pro-bono handyman in the new home). “FORGED” is really the only word I can think of to describe this year. Hammers keep falling from all angles each month and I've grown accustomed to being pulled in and out of the fire regularly 🔥. But never playing the victim – I’m in this forge by choice. I see clearly now, this is how strong weapons are made. ⚒️ It’s the willingness to take on more responsibility, but not become a martyr. It’s having the faith to get out of your team’s way, but be there to support them as much as you possibly can. It’s the trust in yourself to take risks, but standing back up if/when you get knocked down. Challenges like these are life bridges people cross and never look back. 2024 has absolutely been a tricky year to navigate... continuously shifting economic, political, technological, social, and cultural terrains are all complex and exhausting. So, yeah. It may be a year full of hammers 🔨 but we can all refuse to be the nail. Good to be back, missed you all! 😊

    Reflecting on My Journey During Prostate Cancer Awareness Month September marks Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time that holds significant personal importance to me. In August 2020, a routine physical showed elevated PSA levels (echoing a similar scare from four years earlier), which ultimately led to finding a suspicious lesion on my prostate through a subsequent MRI. A biopsy procedure confirmed my diagnosis: prostate cancer with a Gleason Score 6. The reality of a cancer diagnosis is profoundly unsettling, especially when it is your own. On November 20, 2020, I underwent a radical prostatectomy at UIC. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, my wife, Lysa, and my three daughters were unable to be by my side at the hospital. Post-surgery pathology showed parts of the tumor were Gleason Score 7. Those of you close to me knew of my diagnosis. I am choosing to share my story now for two key reasons: Awareness: Since it's Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, I feel strongly about contributing to the ongoing dialogue about this disease. Raising awareness can potentially save lives by encouraging early detection and timely treatment. For the 3rd year, I'm raising money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation by participating in the "Run/Walk Challenge - 108 Miles in September" My goal is to beat my previous best of 120 miles in the month. Hope and Encouragement: Nearly four years post-surgery, my PSA levels remain negligible with no signs of recurrence. While the journey is ongoing, the current outlook is promising! I urge all my male friends to regularly monitor their PSA levels—a simple and painless test that can make a significant difference. To my female friends, please encourage the men in your lives—be they family, friends or loved ones—to stay vigilant about their health. Prostate cancer, caught relatively early like mine, is both treatable and managable. An outgoing bookworm reporting in from the Big Apple, Margaux is a #NewHeart joining our Operations Department as Associate Director of Learning and Development. With years of management, operations, and HR experience under her belt, Margaux is an incredible boost to the Heller roster—but this is only half of the story. Not only does Margaux possess a strong professional portfolio, her phenomenal interpersonal skills and approachability make her a joy to work with. Past colleagues can attest to her creativity and ability to master new concepts even under tight deadlines. All of these skills make her especially well-qualified to train and educate our new employees in the complex world of healthcare marketing. Margaux’s addition to Heller isn’t the only occasion worth celebrating—she recently welcomed a new addition to her family! With both a new baby and a new job on her hands, saying that this is an exciting time for her would be an understatement.     Work/agency friendships can become real friendships. I had that happen to me back in my role as VP, Marketing & Sales at Medexus Pharma, with two talented agency partners who became and remain good friends.  When we first met we got to talking about the critical importance of fostering positive working relationships.     Today is a big day for Heller’s Scientific wing, as we welcome #NewHeart Kavitha Rao, PhD! Kavitha is our latest Midwest addition, coming to us from Naperville, Illinois. Stepping into the role of Senior Scientific Director, Kavitha’s contribution to our growing team has been highly anticipated as she will support our VP, Scientific Director David Gokhin.    Before finding her calling in Scientific Services, Kavitha spent many years as both a medical writer and a copywriter. How’s that for multitalented? This rare combination of creative and scientific prowess made her a unique asset to her colleagues, helping them to write scientifically accurate copy and serving as a resource to teach them about terminology, disease states, patient care, and everything in between. From there, jumping into Scientific Services was an organic progression branching off from her teaching talents. branching off from her talent for teaching.     Kavitha’s story gets even better! Her firsthand experience writing copy now helps her synthesize the creative aspects with the objectivity of science, a vital (and rarely encountered) skill. Everything considered, it makes sense that she someday dreams of seeing the aurora borealis in person. It’s only natural that her love of science extends beyond her laptop into the marvels of the natural world. We are lucky to call Kavitha a member of our team, and we look forward to seeing how our Scientific team continues to blossom with her as a major player.     Chief Creative Officer at Heller

    That Feel. Tom Waits has a song called That Feel on his “Bone Machine” record (one of my all-time favorites) and I can’t help but think of it now as I write this. That Feel… Earlier this summer, I wasn’t looking for a new gig. I was good with where I was. I really liked the people I was working with. We were making good strides, producing quality work, learning, leading, growing. Things were clicking. But, as sometimes happens in life, an opportunity stopped me in my tracks. A recruiter left me a few messages about a potential position. When I finally took the call, they told me it was for CCO of an agency they couldn’t mention yet. “If you’ll have a conversation,” the recruiter said, “I’ll think you’ll like what you hear.” Sure. Why not? I’m always up to talk. Within days, I found out the job was with Heller. I’d heard good things about Heller. I knew a couple of people who made the move there and talked very highly of the work, the clients, the people, the culture. I did my research and some digging on Rob Heller himself, and I liked what I found. From LinkedIn posts, to videos, to anything else I could find, I quickly realized there was “something” about him. Call it an instinct, a hunch - I was getting a sense of That Feel. Once we spoke, I was sure of it. Rob and I agreed our interview (really, more of a conversation) would be a two-way street: I’d be interviewing him just as much as he’d be interviewing me. Turns out, both of us were looking for That Feel. What I learned in our conversation that day is that Rob is a visionary, with a unique POV on what an agency can be. He’s an intensely honest and open person. A founder, leading with courage, conviction and heart. Once I met his leadership team, I was hooked. They, too, had That Feel. A few weeks ago, I started at Heller. And I’m finding that my gut was right. This team has built an extremely strong foundation with a huge amount of potential. I am honored to have been selected to have a hand in helping this agency grow. Here’s to trusting our instincts, following a hunch where it leads, and, now, together, bringing That Feel to all of our clients, projects and future growth ahead. #boldhearts #HellerAgency #HellerEffect
