Dedication, strength and compassion are what set HCA Healthcare colleagues like Gloria Hinojos apart. For five remarkable decades, Gloria has been a steadfast presence at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, positively impacting the lives of thousands of patients and colleagues. In the early 1970s, Gloria began her healthcare career in a nursing home as a nurse aide caring for Holocaust survivors. In 1974, Gloria joined the Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center family as a nurse aide before transitioning into the role of a medical/surgical unit secretary in 1975 and eventually a surgery scheduler in 1986. Driven to advance her healthcare career, Gloria pursued additional education in 1990 to become a surgical technician, a role in which she directly supported surgeons and patients before, during and after procedures in the operating room (OR). In the following years, Gloria’s passion to care for others in the OR inspired her to pursue her nursing degree. Unfortunately, that dream came to a halt when Gloria was diagnosed with stage IV lymphoma. Lymphoma is a group of blood cancers that develop in the lymphatic system. Upon her cancer diagnosis, Gloria’s colleagues became her care team. “I went through 2 years of chemotherapy and my coworkers and doctors gave me comfort and support I never would have expected,” shared Gloria. “This was truly the best time working here at the hospital.” During her treatment, Gloria’s OR colleagues also participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life cancer walk in her honor. Gloria is now 15 years cancer free and is back in the OR. Her love of learning and new technology remains, including recently witnessing the hospital’s first histotripsy, a pioneering non-invasive liver tumor treatment. Please join us in thanking Gloria for 50 years of dedicated service! This Blood Cancer Awareness Month, we also extend our gratitude to our oncology colleagues who compassionately care for our patients, like Gloria, with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders. #CareLikeFamily #BloodCancerAwarenessMonth

Four months ago, HCA Healthcare patient Justine Carter began to experience sudden onset chest pain, shortness of breath and nausea during her treadmill workout. Justine, a 33-year-old wife and mother of two, was home alone with her four-year-old son. Due to the symptoms she was experiencing, Justine immediately called her husband who rushed home. Justine’s mother-in-law, Teresa., also hurried to her side. Justine would later learn that she was experiencing a rare heart attack sparked by a Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD). The inner layer of Justine’s artery had unexpectedly torn, and resulted in the swelling of her artery’s wall and obstructed vital blood flow. In those critical moments, every action mattered. Upon arriving to the scene, Teresa, a nurse at HCA Healthcare’s Mountain View Hospital, Payson, UT, immediately began CPR. Santaquin Fire and EMS arrived within minutes and took over chest compressions while administering on-the-scene care. Their tireless efforts, including multiple shocks with an automated external defibrillator (AED), were crucial in reviving Justine’s heartbeat — after 25 intense minutes. EMS transferred Justine to Mountain View Hospital, where she spent several days in the ICU on a ventilator in a medically induced coma. Clinicians at the hospital, which is accredited for Chest Pain Care by the American College of Cardiology, worked diligently to preserve Justine’s brain function and to facilitate her recovery. Thanks to her care team’s expertise and the swift action of Justine’s mother-in-law and first responders who quickly provided resuscitation efforts, Justine made a remarkable recovery. 25 years ago, Jereme Peterson and Angelina Attaway were high school classmates. The two recently reconnected in an extraordinary way when Angelina gave Jereme the gift of life through a living donor kidney transplant. Today, they share a lifelong bond. HCA Healthcare patient Jereme was on dialysis for three years and was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease, which occurs when a kidney can no longer function on its own. When Angelia learned on social media that Jereme was in need of a living kidney donor, she jumped at the chance to save a life -- especially one of a childhood friend. When Angelia found out she was a match to be Jereme’s kidney donor, she flew from their home state of Florida to the Medical City Dallas Transplant Institute for the surgery. The Medical City Healthcare hospital provides specialized organ transplants for patients in need of kidney, pancreas, liver and multi-organ transplants. Angelina hoped to be Jereme’s anonymous living kidney donor but it was happenstance that the two of them bumped into each other when pre-registering before their surgeries. Jereme and Angelina hugged, shared a few laughs — and then Jereme asked, “Why are you here all the way from Florida?” Angelina replied, “I’m your donor.” Today, Jereme is thankful to have another chance at life through organ donation thanks to a successful robotic kidney transplant. “I just hope other people will know how incredible of a gift this is and consider being organ donors,” he shared. “It’s given me my life back.” Thank you to our highly skilled transplant teams across HCA Healthcare who care for patients, like Jereme and Angelina, through every step of their transplant journey. Across HCA Healthcare, our facility, service and therapy animals support patients, their loved ones and our care teams – spreading “pawsitivity” with every interaction. Studies have shown that animal therapy helps to reduce anxiety, decrease loneliness and lower blood pressure. This #NationalDogDay, we’re shining a light on TriStar Centennial Medical Center and The Children’s Hospital At TriStar Centennial’s facility dog, Minnie Pearl. Minnie Pearl’s namesake holds special meaning to both the HCA Healthcare family and the Nashville, Tennessee community. “Minnie Pearl” was the stage name of world-renowned Grand Ole Opry character and television and radio personality, Sarah Cannon. After receiving treatment for breast cancer at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Network’s founding center in Nashville, she offered the use of her given name to promote cancer research and patient education with a vision of offering patients convenient access to early detection and clinical trials. HCA Healthcare’s Sarah Cannon Cancer Network now cares for communities across the U.S. and United Kingdom, forming one of the largest patient-centric clinical trial organizations in the world. In her first few months on the job, Minnie has already made a lasting impact at the Music City hospital and has quickly become a beloved member of the care team. She is a fixture at hospital events, and recently attended one thrown in her honor — her first birthday party. Thank you to our four-legged colleagues for serving as a source of joy within the walls of our hospitals. 📸 To celebrate National Dog Day, share a picture of your furry friend in the comment section! #PositiveImpact

Meet HCA Healthcare’s dedicated, dynamic duo: Sherrie and Terrie Allen. Through their combined 100 years of service, the identical twins have brought love, joy and laughter to patients and colleagues at HCA Midwest Health’s Research Medical Center . In 1974, Sherrie and Terrie embarked on their healthcare career at the Kansas City, Missouri hospital and have made a difference in countless lives. The 50-year veteran patient care technicians (PCTs) recently celebrated their legacy during a retirement celebration at the hospital. “To say Sherrie and Terrie are a true staple of RMC is an understatement,” said Katie Keens, nurse director. “They radiate hard work, dedication, and resilience. Not to mention, they deliver high-quality patient care with the utmost positivity each and every shift they work. You can find them mirroring one another with not only what they wear, but the twin energy they bring every single day.” As patient care technicians, Sherrie and Terrie’s diverse skill sets were essential to patient’s care journeys. Working alongside nurses and other clinicians, patient care technicians assist in both clinical and administrative duties such as transporting patients, gathering essential medical supplies, checking vitals and documenting patient information. “We really think of this place as our second home,” Terrie shared. “A lot of people say that, but we really mean it. I’m not sure it’s really set in yet that we’re leaving our own family.” Sherrie added, “I will miss the patients the most. Together, we truly help patients a lot, and although they are in the hospital, we get big smiles out of them.” Please join us in wishing Sherrie and Terrie a happy retirement and thanking them for their half a century of service. #PositiveImpact #CareLikeFamily

It’s something most everyone has in common. It’s a way we can connect to one another. It’s unifying and familiar. It’s therapeutic. “It”…is music. And, for patients at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare Children’s Hospital, one incredible nurse is using music to uplift and bring joy. Pediatric Emergency Room Nurse Lummer Dumapat was motivated to combine his passions – music and nursing – to help alleviate children’s fears about hospital environments and undergoing medical procedures. He decided to learn a new skill and now plays the ukulele to comfort his patients. Lummer draws inspiration from his mother, who provided medical care to small villages around their community. "Growing up, I watched [my mom] work in rural communities, providing compassionate care to those in need,” said Lummer, who is originally from the Philippines. “Her commitment left a lasting impression on me, and I’m thrilled to have found a career where I can offer the same kind of care and make a positive impact on people’s lives.” Thank you, Lummer, for your dedication to the care and improvement of human life. #CareLikeFamily #HCANursing

Across HCA Healthcare, our colleagues’ care extends beyond the walls of their hospitals and in to the communities where they live and work. On June 29, Matt Anderson and his daughter, Aspen, were traveling from their home in Brigham City, Utah, to Ogden, Utah when they were involved in a serious motorcycle accident. 19-year-old Aspen, suffered the most severe injuries to her leg and her foot, which was partially amputated in the collision. Traveling the same highway that day was off-duty HCA Healthcare nurse, Carrie Becker, who cares for patients in the emergency room at Ogden Regional Medical Center, a Level II Trauma Center. As soon as she recognized Aspen’s critical state, Carrie immediately stopped and jumped into action to administer life-saving care. Using the scarf of another passerby who had stopped to help, she applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding, which ultimately helped save Aspen’s foot from amputation. Carrie provided care and comfort to Aspen and her father until first responders arrived on the scene. During her recovery, Aspen continuously expressed her gratitude for Carrie’s care to her family. Six weeks after the accident, Aspen had the opportunity to share this gratitude with Carrie in person when they reunited. Thank you to the HCA Healthcare nurses, like Carrie, who live out our mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life. Watch this heartwarming reunion and learn more about Aspen and Carrie’s story: https://bit.ly/46LPJhZ. #CareLikeFamily
