  • Bertha and Barry Bourque entered HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, for a regular induction to deliver their first baby. Thirty hours later and in the early stage of landfall of Hurricane Milton, obstetrician Dr Samir Shakfeh made a decision to prepare the OR for a cesarean section as the baby’s heart rate dropped during strong contractions. Barry had been watching both baby’s heart monitor along with the storm outside the labor and delivery window with concern. “Dr. Shakfeh saved our baby’s life,” said Bertha. “While the delivery was not what we’d planned for, we both knew that ultimately a c-section was the safest option for us.” Bjorn was delivered at 8:13 p.m. amidst Hurricane Milton’s increasing intensity. Barry was not prepared for the rush of emotion he felt when their baby boy Bjorn Adrian was delivered. “I’ve never experienced anything quite like this rush of emotion, or the roller coaster of the experience. Once I heard Bjorn cry, I was overwhelmed with the feeling of awe,” he said. “I am amazed with my wife’s strength through the delivery and how she’s cared for Bjorn already in the first hours of his life.” Bertha can’t say enough about her life partner. “He’s been such a support, not leaving my side through labor, holding my hand, helping me to get up from my chair or the bed. Anything I need, he’s here with me.” She added that she was deeply grateful for the staff at Oak Hill Hospital, starting with Dr. Shakfeh and including her labor and delivery nurse Lauren. “Lauren was with me from the worst part of my induction to the c-section. She was so sweet and attentive and listened to me. She was simply phenomenal,” she said. And, postpartum care has been amazing, Bertha added. “Our nurse Jessica has been so attentive. As an independent adult, I felt very vulnerable while she was helping me to care for myself when I couldn’t leave my bed. The whole time she was caring for me I felt at ease and not at all like a burden.” Overall, the couple agreed that their care was amazingly attentive, are grateful to be holding sweet baby Bjorn in their arms and are convinced that together they can weather any storm. #HCAFlorida #HurricaneMilton

  • It was such an honor to meet this couple and baby Peyton and share their story!

When Shaylyn Gulley and husband Mark Earley traveled to HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital the early afternoon of September 26, they did not expect to stay overnight. What seemed like a late pregnancy checkup turned into active labor for their baby girl due September 29. As Hurricane Helene’s intensity grew, sweet baby Peyton Olyvia was born at 5:33 p.m.! Shaylyn shared that they had a quick labor, excellent support and an overall positive experience. “I thought we’d be sent home after the check up, but we stayed through the hurricane to deliver,” she said. When asked about the delivery, Mark was very moved. He said, “I helped deliver my own baby. It was an experience like no other!” He then joked, “I now can say I officially delivered my first baby.” In addition to Peyton, the couple’s son Ryker was also born at Oak Hill Hospital nearly three years ago. Congratulations and best wishes to the family and to Baby Peyton, Oak Hill Hospital’s first baby born during Hurricane Helene. #HurricaneHelene #newbaby #HCAFlorida

  • From patient to nurse... Long before they chose to care for others, our nurses are often inspired by the collaborative efforts of other healthcare professionals during their own care and treatment. “When considering a career path, I actually envisioned becoming an accountant, but I discovered nursing after I incurred a thumb injury,” recalls Chris Avery, RN of HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital. “While recovering after surgery, I noticed how well the doctors and nurses worked together during my hospital stay. I had no idea what the job entailed, but through school and training, now I'm a nurse, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.” #HCAnursing #nursing #HCAFlorida

  • Last week, Oak Hill Hospital's senior leadership team had the opportunity to Walk in your World, accompanying colleagues throughout the hospital to share in the day-to-day experiences in their jobs. The leaders wanted to learn what is working well and where there are opportunities to streamline processes or align different operational functions at the hospital. CEO Ken Wicker shadowed wound care nurse Cheryl Tracey, RN, as she traversed nearly the entire hospital. He was struck by her passion for her work, her patience in teaching patients, families and fellow nurses how best to care for our patients and her willingness to offer her assistance to any care provider who needed her help. Ken said about Cheryl, "She is a great asset to those providing direct patient care and a great asset to the hospital." #HCAFlorida

  • When the Chief Medical Officer of HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital spent a few hours accompanying medical surgical nurse Julia Herne, RN, he was impressed with her calm, caring and efficient manner as she navigated her patients and completed appropriate documentation in each patient's electronic medical record. The hours Dr. David Slovut spent with Julia were hours well spent, and he complimented Julia and her colleagues for the amazing care the nurses provide to patients each and every day (and night).
