  • This week in National Make a Difference to Children Month, we are spotlighting Studio Director Jason Smith, RA, LEED AP BD+C, CSI, CDT and the Malverne Union Free School District’s High School’s Performing Arts Center. Despite their award-winning band, the Malverne High School did not have its own auditorium. Students had to use the middle school’s facilities across the street. H2M architects + engineers designed a 29,273-square-foot addition comprising a 300-seat auditorium, large chorus room with smaller practice rooms, large band room surrounded by smaller private instruction rooms, dark room for black-and-white film, art room, and a music theory and piano lab. Mr. Smith is an alum of the Malverne School District. He graduated from the high school when most events were held in the gym, which is not well-suited for the performing arts. He remembers the high school as cramped before the addition improved indoor circulation and flow. “The arts are a component of overall learning and becoming well-rounded,” Smith explained. “Certain students excel scholastically but others excel in the arts. You shouldn’t be hindered in achieving excellence just because the school doesn’t have the space.”

  • This week, in our National Make a Difference to Children Month series, we are highlighting Education Market Director Saverio Belfiore, AIA and the Café at Synergy, a student-run coffeehouse in the Mineola Union Free School District’s Synergy Building. Located across from the Mineola High School, the Synergy Building is primarily the District’s science, technology, engineering, and math center annex for high school students. H2M architects + engineers renovated the former local credit union bank to add labs to the lower floor, move the District’s administrative offices from the Jackson Avenue School to Synergy’s upper floor, and add the Café. Noted for its Career and Technical Education program, students have the opportunity to earn non-academic credits that they can use towards graduation. Students working in the Café can warm up food, serve hot drinks, earn work experience in the customer and food service industries, and learn entrepreneurial skills such managing, budgeting, and collaborative thinking. “There are some students who are not fully interested in academics,” Belfiore explained. “Projects like this make a difference by giving students the opportunity to express themselves through entrepreneurial and technical experiences. We are designing atmospheres for students to flourish in non-academic settings and preparing students to enter the workforce.”

  • In the Spring of 2022, Troy Office Director Katrina Pacheco, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP, served in the Mentorship Program as a highly valued mentor. Her guidance helped Project Designer Keyuri Patel, find new inspiration for her work and offered support during her transition from maternity leave back into the office as a working mother.   Katrina's approach to mentoring emphasizes developing a connection, providing real-life examples, and creating a vision. “Connecting to Keyuri was personal and professional; we are part of a firm made of people who do great and wonderful things for each other on many levels. Discussing examples from experience attaches meaning to our challenges and achievements. Future success is built on these mutual foundations. The visions of our futures, for my mentee and myself, are inspired by the care and insight shared in our conversations,” Katrina explains.   “My goal is to help a fellow H2Mer find inspiration for their work, advocate for their personal and professional growth, help them understand themselves better, and provide necessary guidance in this early phase of their career,” She continues. “Seeing a mentee succeed is my personal goal.”   Katrina believes access to mentorship is essential for career development within our firm, however self-advocacy is just as important. She explains, “Everyone who is hungry to advance their careers deserves a mentor in the firm, especially one who has been in their position before. Keyuri’s drive is essential for reaching the goals she sets for herself. She knows success won’t be handed to her and she is committed to the process.” The experience and industry knowledge provided by Katrina and other mentors in the program enhances H2M’s company culture and creates an environment where staff are able to produce the best results possible. She concludes, “The amount of experience represented by H2M’s leadership is tremendous and should be shared as much as possible to build each other up.”

  • Last night, H2M architects + engineers presented scholarships to high school seniors who are planning on enrolling in science, technology, engineering, architecture, or math (STEAM) majors in college. Twelve students from Long Island, Westchester County, and New Jersey each received $1,000 to further their academic careers. Many also received citations from their local elected officials.   The ceremony opened with an introduction by Chief Human Resources Officer Liz Uzzo, SHRM-SCP, SPHR who described the history of H2M’s scholarship program, which began in the early 1990s. This year, H2M’s human resources team sent the scholarship applications to over 300 high schools in the tri-state area. A committee then read through each application and selected the top 12 students.   Chief Operating Officer Joseph Mottola, AIA and Education Market Deputy Director Michael Lantier, P.E., LEED AP also spoke during the ceremony about their excitement for the potential in each scholarship recipient and the opportunities they have to impact their communities.   “We at H2M are pumped and excited because what we do every single day makes a difference,” Mottola explained. “You guys are just starting your journey.”   Other H2M leaders, such as Chief Financial Officer Jamie Pizzardi, CPA attended to support the students and their families. The ceremony closed with a Q&A session, networking opportunities, and a tour of H2M’s corporate headquarters in Melville.
