A team of researchers at GW led by Adelina Voutchkova developed a groundbreaking method to convert alcohols to hydrocarbons. New mechanisms and catalysts offer high selectivity and energy efficiency, outperforming existing techniques.  The USPTO granted patent no. 12,071,386 for the GW technology “Conversion Of Alcohols And Aldehydes To Energy-dense Hydrocarbon Fuel Mixtures” on August 27, 2024. The proposed technology uses heterogeneous Pd catalysts on acid-base supports, enabling complete deoxygenative coupling without base additives, significantly improving upon existing Guerbet condensation techniques.  The technology supports conversion of a wide variety of alcohols into energy-dense hydrocarbon fuels. Researchers from the George Washington University, Saniya LeBlanc, an Associate Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, and Bengisu ŞİŞİK, a doctoral student in LeBlanc’s lab, co-authored an article titled "Geometric design of Cu2Se-based thermoelectric materials for enhancing power generation." The performance of thermoelectric modules is influenced by both the intrinsic properties of materials and the temperature difference they can generate. While significant progress was made in developing more efficient materials, there is less focus on macroscopic thermal designs that can handle larger temperature differentials due to the challenges of processing bulk thermoelectric materials. In their article, the researchers propose a novel design strategy for enhancing power generation in Cu2Se thermoelectric materials, combining finite element modeling with 3D printing techniques. Advanced 3D printing and post-treatment process optimizes the macroscopic geometries and reduces microscopic defects. This helps to achieve significant improvements in material efficiency and temperature differentials. The paper studies efficiency of various geometric shapes for Cu2Se thermoelectric materials, paving the way for more efficient, reliable, and sustainable thermoelectric power generation. Researchers at GW take a major leap forward in the satellite propulsion technology. The USPTO granted patent no. 12,044,220 for the GW technology “Two-stage Low-Power and High-thrust To Power Electronic Propulsion System,” developed by Michael Keidar and Denis Zolotukhin.  The researchers introduced novel plasma accelerator technology that is highly efficient in comparison to existing accelerators. This innovative two-stage pulsed magneto plasma dynamical (MPD) thruster uses a magnetized vacuum arc metallic plasma and outperforms current plasma accelerator technologies in terms of thrust, thrust-to-power ratio, dissipation power, and ion charge.  Given its enhancements, the accelerator is particularly well-suited for orbit raising, interplanetary missions, and microsatellite propulsion, among other general propulsion applications. As the industry continues to evolve, innovations like this will be instrumental in expanding the capabilities of micro and nanosatellites. The GW Technology Commercialization Office is pleased to congratulate Laxmi Yogita Attaluri, our former Student Communications Assistant, on her recent accomplishments!  Yogita graduated in May with a Master’s degree in Computer Science from The George Washington University and just started a position as a Data & Analytics Specialist at DC Water. Her new role involves designing and developing solutions for key applications across various departments. She started at DC Water as a summer intern with the R&D team, where she contributed to projects relating to data analytics, ML, and reporting. At TCO, Yogita made significant contributions to our digital presence and communications efforts by creating content for TCO social media channels, managing the TCO website, designing mass emails, and assisting with event planning.  As Yogita reflects her time at TCO, she shares, “At TCO, I was fortunate to have Brian as my mentor, whose insights and guidance were instrumental in shaping my professional path. LaToya’s unwavering support and the collaborative environment with the rest of the team helped me build confidence and skills that contributed to my career growth. The National Science Foundation (NSF) awards approximately 500 Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Program Awards annually to support early-career researchers. The 2024 NSF CISE Career Workshop was sponsored by the NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE). The event, hosted on April 29 and 30 at the Science and Engineering Hall, was coordinated by GW Engineering Professors Tian Lan and Weidong Cao, along with Dr. Wenjing Lou and Dr. Bo Ji from Virginia Tech. The workshop aimed to guide early-career faculty in preparing and submitting proposals for the NSF CAREER Program, bringing together 150 in-person attendees in addition to virtual participants to engage directly with the NSF program directors. The workshop included presentations, panel discussions, and breakout sessions, focused on crafting strong research and education plans and fostered networking opportunities. Professor Cao expressed that the insights shared by past awardees as well as interaction with peers and NSF program directors would benefit early-career faculty members and investigators.
