FRAUD ALERT: The National Elder Justice Coordinator at the U.S. Department of Justice joins the Social Security Administration in warning Americans about a dangerous new scam. The Social Security Office of the Inspector General is receiving reports of criminals impersonating Social Security Administration agents and requesting that their targets meet them in person to hand off cash. This con introduces a new and terrifying element of physical danger to impersonation #scams. Social Security staff will never pick up money at your door or in any type of exchange or demand payment in a specific form, such as cash or gift cards. NEVER exchange money or funds of any kind with any individual claiming to represent the Social Security Administration. “This is the latest example of how scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to intimidate or pressure people into making hasty decisions that usually involve stealing their target’s hard-earned money,” said Inspector General Gail S. Ennis. “While our agents are out in the field, they will not ask you for money. I urge you not to respond to these kinds of requests.” #elderjustice #elderfraud

These workshops may be the only such course available to #olderadults who do not have access to private financial services, according to a study of our workshops published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work. The Money Smart+ series is made possible by City of Fort Worth Neighborhood Services, and locations are chosen to be convenient to low- and moderate-income Fort Worth residents ages 62 and older.
