It has been an honor to feature each and every Trailblazer in homeland security. We can't wait to see what new path they will blaze next! Ryan Eddy, PMP is setting the standard ablaze as Director for Homeland Security Programs at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where he oversees nearly $80M in annual research programs across 50 national security projects. His fire for innovation and strategic leadership in areas such as explosives detection, nuclear security, and cybersecurity has made him a key player in supporting the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s mission and bridging the need for science-based decision-making. Shane Barney is a trailblazer in cybersecurity as the Chief Information Security Officer for USCIS. He leaned in to automation early and developed an entire SOC of threat hunters to create a brand new cyber strategy instead of focusing on a rigid compliance mindset and is working to develop a more “fluid” compliance framework that meets compliance requirements while maintaining the ability to adapt to the rapidly changing nature of automated machine learning. Shonnie Lyon is leading the evolution of biometric identity services – evolving the policies, commitment to privacy, and research and development needed allowing frontline personnel to accurately assess whether an in individual is a threat to the country. As the Director of the Office of Biometric Identity Management (OBIM) at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Shonnie is at the forefront of the advancements in biometric identity and is shining light on rapidly evolving emerging technologies including face recognition, speaker recognition, craniofacial structural progression, contactless fingerprints, and DNA to support accurate and actionable biometric evidence. Stephanie Wade is a global innovation firestarter, a leader whose cutting-edge spirit has ignited change across continents and industries. As the Founder and CEO of Ascendant, Stephanie works across the globe to use human-centered designs and transformative strategy to keep cities and countries agile and on the cutting edge of emerging tech and threats. Tom Chaleki is the infrastructure inferno whose work at DHS has set new standards for efficiency and sustainability. As the recently retired Chief Readiness Support Officer, Tom’s influence was a wildfire of innovation, spreading across the agency and leaving a legacy of improved operations and strategic initiatives. LBI has evolved from the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) launched in 2009, into a comprehensive program that fuels progress in border management. Molly’s oversight ensures that LBI supports Trade and Travel Operations and enhances efficiency at Ports of Entry, reducing delays for travelers. Ntina Cooper is the silent inferno whose work at CBP has made a powerful yet often unseen impact. As the Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner of Enterprise Services, Ntina’s influence is like an underground fire—steady, strong, and vital to the integrity of the entire organization. Her leadership is characterized by her ability to navigate complex challenges with quiet determination, ensuring that CBP’s operations are always running smoothly. Olivia Trivisani Bowker is blazing new trails in the technology industry as the founder and CEO of Amivero. With over 15 years of experience, Olivia’s fire for growth has propelled Amivero to a remarkable 453% expansion in the last three years. At the forefront of robotics automation and processing, Olivia has ignited innovation while building strong relationships with customers and partners. @Richard Moreta is a security visionary whose work has set DHS’s Enterprise Security Operations and Support on fire with innovation and efficiency. Richard’s development of the new personnel security portal was like lighting a fuse—what started as a spark quickly turned into a blaze of improvement, streamlining security clearance reviews and communication with stakeholders. Robin Champ, VP of Strategic Foresight at LBL Strategies, is the torchbearer of strategic foresight, setting the path ablaze with her visionary leadership. As co-chair of the newly formed Federal Foresight Advocacy Alliance (FFAA) Robin is illuminatnig the field by spearheading efforts to establish a federal office of strategic foresight to assure the nation’s agencies and leadership are fully aware of changing landscapes across multiple disciplines that will impact our country’s future. It is truly an honor to eelebrate these 50 Trailblazers in Homeland Security, honoring their dedication, leadership, and pioneering contributions to keeping our nation safe. Mara Winn realized that when there’s smoke, there’s fire, when #Ukraine’s electric grid fell victim to attacks by Russia. As Deputy Director for Preparedness, Policy, and Risk Analysis at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER) she immediately stoked her team’s work on shoring up protection of the nation’s vulnerable energy resources. Maren Brooks, fans the flames of innovation, change, and strategy. Her ability to navigate the complexities of irregular warfare and counterterrorism while keeping the fire burning for collaboration and change is what makes her a true trailblazer. She has left an indelible mark, not just as a leader but as a woman who continues to blaze trails in national security. Mary Ellen Callahan is the firebrand of the Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction (#CWMD) office, where her leadership has ignited a powerful push for reauthorization and innovation. She leads the Department’s efforts and coordinates with domestic and international partners to safeguard the United States against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (#CBRN) threats. Michael Boyce is the AI Corps leader whose work is setting the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) alight with innovation and technological advancement. His leadership is instrumental in organizing the 50 individuals that play pivotal roles leveraging AI across strategic mission areas, including countering fentanyl trafficking, combatting online child sexual exploitation and abuse, delivering immigration services, fortifying critical infrastructure, and enhancing cybersecurity. Michael Schmidt, is the #CHIPS champion whose work has reignited the U.S. manufacturing sector. At the helm of the CHIPS Incentives Program within the Commerce Department, Mike’s leadership is the driving force behind a historic public investment in semiconductor manufacturing a blaze of innovation that is lighting up the future of American industry. His strategic vision is not just about revitalizing manufacturing; it is about securing the nation’s technological future. Jeremiah J. Cottle, Esq. embodies the firebrand spirit of foresight, blazing a trail through uncertainty and lighting the way for others. As the lead futurist in the United States Secret Service’s Office of Strategy, Planning, and Innovation, Jeremiah doesn’t just anticipate the future; he actively shapes it. His work ensures that the agency is always prepared for what lies ahead, with a vision that burns brightly and clearly. @Joe Draganac is fighting against the blazing impacts of fentanyl on American citizens. Joe’s work at the U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the fire that drives the nation’s efforts to combat the spread of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs. Kaitlin Sahni is a prosecutorial powerhouse whose burning resolve has taken down some of the most dangerous drug cartels in the world. Kaitlin’s prosecution of individuals supplying chemicals to cartels was a game-changer, setting a new standard for how these cases are handled. Her ability to crack complex cases and trace illicit chemical shipments across the globe is a testament to her fiery determination and sharp legal mind. Kelly Murray is stoking the flames to secure the chemical sector and stop threats posed by dangerous chemicals. At the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Kelly is the Associate Director for Chemical Security and since Congress failed to reauthorize the Chemical Facility Anti-Terrorism Standards (#CFATS) program, she has kept the fire lit over its importance — and shining light on the potential consequences of its lapse. Lisa Einstein is trailblazing in the world of artificial intelligence, where her visionary leadership is charting the course for the future at the CISA. As CISA’s first Chief #AI Officer, Lisa is at the helm of integrating AI into national security, turning what was once fantasy into a blazing reality.
