We are proud to share that William Gallin co-authored the ScienceDirect paper “Gigaton Commercial-Scale Carbon Storage and Mineralization Potential in Stacked Columbia River Basalt Reservoirs” alongside Ruoshi Cao, Quin R.S. Miller, Casie Davidson, Stephen Reidel, Zunsheng Jiao, Fred McLaughlin, Emily Nienhuis, and Herbert Schaef. The study reveals the potential of the Columbia River Basalt Group (CRBG) for large-scale CO2 storage, identifying up to 40 gigatons of mineralization storage resources in the Grande Ronde Basalt (GRB) reservoirs. The research emphasizes the effectiveness of structural and mineralization trapping, providing a pathway for secure, long-term carbon storage. An update to USG-Transport, an extension of MODFLOW-USG designed to simulate the transport of contaminants and other solutes in groundwater, is available on the GSI website. Version 2.4.0 includes some requested updates including: 1. Decay and generation of compounds adsorbed on the air water interface. This is useful for simulating reactions of PFAS compounds or degradation of precursors in soil, water and on air-water interface.  2. Option for allowing the barriers of the HFB package to change conductance with stress periods. 3. Expanding the options in DRT and QRT packages for manipulating the return flow concentrations as follows: 3a. Prescribing a fixed concentration or mass in return flow. 3b. Reducing return flow concentrations to a prescribed value, if above that prescribed value. 4. Using initial pressure head input for solving Richards' Equation to be compatible with other software inputs. Note that the pressure head is internally converted to hydraulic head for computations and output is still in hydraulic head. This version also includes bug fixes and updates to the documentation. Notable bug fix is the compressible storage term in transport which occurs when the specific storage is large. Datasets for the example problems listed in the document are also included with this release. Major features of USG-Transport (USGT) include: ·         Structured and unstructured grid support ·         Connected linear network (CLNs) for simulating wells, pipes, streams, and wetlands using a variety of flow formulations (Laminar, Mannings, Hazen-Williams, Darcy-Weisbach) ·         Saturated-Unsaturated flow with 3-D Richards Equation ·         Multicomponent transport with chain decay and generation of daughter components ·         Flow and Transport in dual porosity system and in CLN domain ·         PFAS transport in vadose and saturated zones (in single and dual porosity media) with decay of PFAS precursor components ·         Heat transport in vadose and saturated zones (in single and dual porosity media) including with Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHEs) ·         Density-dependent flow and transport ·         PHREEQC integration* - Available as a separate executable on GSIs website ·         Many convenient features to assist modeler, speed up model runtimes and facilitate pre / postprocessing ·         Supported by GUIs, PEST utilities, particle tracking routines.
