Episode #5: In this episode, Julia Hansen interviews Scott Vlasak, the architect of record for two GSX modular projects. They discuss the benefits and challenges of using standardized unit designs in modular construction. Scott shares his experience with the design process, coordination with modular manufacturers, and cost and time savings of standardized designs. He also addresses concerns about the impact of standardized designs on architectural creativity and the future of the architecture profession. Takeaways Standardized unit designs in modular construction can save time and money by reducing the need for design changes and streamlining the coordination process. Front-loading the design process and finalizing details upfront can help avoid surprises and delays during construction. Standardized designs do not limit architectural creativity but can still create unique and aesthetically pleasing buildings. Architects and design professionals are still essential in putting together the puzzle of standardized units and creating functional and cohesive buildings. Modular construction and standardized designs do not threaten the future of the architecture profession. Thinking Inside the Box Podcast Episode 2: Applying Mass Production Principles in Modular Construction In this episode, Julia Hansen interviews Hans Hawrysz, the Director of Product Development at GreenStaxx, about the benefits and requirements of using standardized design in the modular construction industry. They discuss how standardization can help address the affordable housing crisis by increasing efficiency and reducing costs. Hans explains that standardization is based on mass production principles, including standardized components, organized processes, assembly lines, and specialized teams. He gives examples of successful standardization in other industries, such as the shipping container and mobile home industries. Hans also highlights how GreenStaxx has applied standardization in its modular units, organized around standardized dimensions and pre-designed and pre-engineered for efficiency. He emphasizes the importance of replication and the learning curve in achieving the benefits of standardization. Finally, Hans discusses the challenges of implementing standardized designs in the modular construction industry, including the industry's focus on bespoke buildings and the need for developers to drive the adoption of standardization. #modular #modularconstruction #multifamilymodular https://lnkd.in/ey_paBMF

I'm encouraged to see this report that nation-wide building performance standards are being adopted in the US when it comes to lowering CO2 emissions from buildings. Lately there have been several great articles in the NYT that show how the construction industry in Europe is much more productive and cost-efficient because they use performance standards instead of prescriptive building codes that vary across jurisdictions (for example, with elevators https://lnkd.in/eiikavf8). Could this signal a turn to standardized performance codes across the US building industry?
