  • HOLLYWOOD HISTORY THE 100 BEST HORROR MOVIES OF ALL TIME (Credit: Variety) If cinema is like dreaming with our eyes open, then horror movies could rightly be viewed as waking nightmares: an opportunity to confront our unconscious fears directly — most often as entertainment, but sometimes with the express purpose of terrifying ourselves. On-screen frights take every form imaginable, from iconic boogeymen like Frankenstein and Freddy Krueger to real-world threats, be it psychosis, contagion or off-putting in-laws (“Get Out,” anyone?). In compiling a list of the genre’s highest achievements, we considered it all, from highbrow to lo-fi, pure schlock to Hitchcock (whose “Psycho” topped our “Greatest Films” list, but not this one), reaching back to the advent of cinema. Well, maybe not quite the beginning. According to legend, 1895 audiences recoiled in fear when they saw the train pull into La Ciotat station in the Lumière brothers’ early actuality film. We don’t count that as horror, though it certainly demonstrated the medium’s capacity to startle people. The question “What is horror?” echoed at the center of every discussion, with long hours spent arguing over where the boundaries lie for a genre that has launched many a career. How often has one of these waking nightmares upset you enough to resurface in your dreams? If we’ve done our job, you’ll want to join the debate. — To view the list compiled by horror movie buffs for Variety, click on the below link (feel free to add your favorites not listed): https://lnkd.in/geYa9bdf#hollywoodhistory #horrormoviesandchill #horrorjunkie #Halloween

  • NEWS AND INFORMATION HOW TO WATCH THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF 'SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE' (By Dessi Gomez for Deadline) With Jason Reitman’s "Saturday Night" now out in theaters, many viewers may find themselves on the edge of their seats and wanting to see what happened in the very first episode of "Saturday Night Live." "Saturday Night" follows the 90 minutes leading up to SNL’s first-ever broadcast on the evening of Oct. 11, 1975, ending just before all the cast were set to go on air. Starring Gabriel LaBelle, Rachel Sennott, Ella Hunt, Dylan O’Brien, LaMorne Morris, Finn Wolfhard, Nicholas Braun, Cooper Hoffman and others, the film arrived in theaters a week before the actual 50th anniversary, on which the film will be released wide. For details about how to watch the first episode of "Saturday Night Live," read on. WHERE CAN I STREAM THE VERY FIRST EPISODE OF "SNL"? Only one streaming service has all 50 seasons of "Saturday Night Live" available for streaming, and that is Peacock. The inaugural sketch comedy episode featured George Carlin and musical guests Billy Preston and Janis Ian, and it can be found at the very beginning of the streamer’s "SNL" catalog. WHO WAS IN THE FIRST EPISODE OF "SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE"? The first-ever “Weekend Update” segment was anchored by Chevy Chase with special correspondent Laraine Newman. John Belushi, Michael O’Donaghue, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris and Jane Curtin also appeared. HOW DID THE "SNL" STRUCTURE CHANGE AFTER THE FIRST EPISODE? The sketch comedy show evolved to later include a monologue, which wasn’t set for the first episode. Instead, Carlin had four standup segments, and there were four musical performances. Several comedians and entertainers who weren’t part of the "SNL" ensemble cast featured in the first episode as well for various skits. WHO IS IN THE CAST OF JASON REITMAN'S "SATURDAY NIGHT" FILM? • NEWS AND INFORMATION REALITY TV'S ILLUSION: WHY HOLLYWOOD STOPPED BANKROLLING UNSCRIPTED (By Jose Alejandro Bastidas and Loree Seitz) As production for the once vast genre dwindles in the U.S., sports and digital creator-led projects like “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” offer a path forward. [Reality] programming, once considered a cheap and plentiful way to fill the pipeline of cable and streaming companies, is in a nosedive. The first half of 2024 saw the lowest series orders for unscripted programming since 2019, according to research from Ampere Analysis. The company recorded a peak of 493 overall unscripted series orders in the second quarter of 2024, a 22% decrease from the highest recorded peak to date of 637 in the second quarter of 2022. Series orders traditionally peak during Q2 every year. [Another] recent trend in reality production is entertainment companies are moving production out of New York and Los Angeles for cheaper spots in the U.S. and overseas. [Experts] and industry insiders who spoke with TheWrap attribute the decline to a number of key factors. The end of the “peak TV” era that ran from 2010-2022 has led to an industry-wide contraction in Hollywood. Added to that, studios have broadly consolidated amid a spate of mergers — which has left fewer buyers in the marketplace — and tightened budgets across the board. [A] critical piece of the puzzle lies in how the decline has pulled back the veil on reality television’s model of low cost-high profitability, much like recent controversies within the “Love is Blind” and “The Bachelor” franchises have squandered any semblance of “reality” from their premises. Unlike scripted television, the unscripted business model has not evolved from the days of cable supremacy when reality series on MTV, E! and VH1 became part of the cultural conversation in the U.S. “It’s always been a pennies and nickels business, not a dimes and dollars business,” a former TV executive told TheWrap. • NEWS AND INFORMATION IMDB LAUNCHES SAG-AFTRA VERIFIED BADGES FOR UNION MEMBERS (By Katie Kilkenny) The online database has partnered with the labor group to feature labor group affiliation in performers' public and IMDb Pro profiles. IMDb has unveiled a feature allowing members of SAG-AFTRA to display their affiliation with the performers’ union on their public and IMDbPro profiles. The Amazon-owned online film and television database introduced verified badges for union members in September. “As part of our ongoing work to empower entertainment professionals to showcase themselves and their careers on IMDbPro, we’ve launched a new feature for individuals to verify their membership in a professional organization,” a spokesperson for IMDbPro told The Hollywood Reporter. “Professionals who verify their membership have the organization’s logo displayed in the ‘Verified Affiliations’ section on their IMDb and IMDbPro name pages.” IMDbPro is a professional version of the popular database that offers information on users’ representatives, companies and contact information, among other features. Members of both IMDbPro’s free subscription service and its paid service can verify their union membership and display the badges. As part of the change, users of IMDbPro Premium can also filter their advanced searches by SAG-AFTRA membership. (Union members with verified badges are also able to receive 30 percent off of subscriptions to IMDb Pro Premium as part of the change.)
