Last week, we celebrated the official launch of our Resilient Roots: Climate Leaders Network! Our cohort of 20 dedicated residents from Suisun City and Fairfield gathered at Lawler Falls Park to kick off this exciting journey. This celebration couldn't be more timely, following International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on Sunday. Our Climate Leaders truly embody this year's theme: "Empowering the Next Generation for a Resilient Future." With 10 exciting months ahead, these community advocates will dive into climate education and skill-building—from policy workshops to green infrastructure design—becoming powerful voices for local climate action and disaster resilience. Alongside Sustainable Solano, we're nurturing a greener, more resilient future in Solano County—and it's clear from our launch party that the future is bright! This Indigenous Peoples Day, we're reflecting on the critical role of Indigenous knowledge in addressing climate challenges, especially in the Bay Area. At the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC)'s Rising Together summit on shoreline adaptation, we attended a session hosted by Gregg Castro [t'rowt'raahl Salinan/rumsien-ramaytush Ohlone], the Cultural Director for the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone and Sara Moncada [Yaqui/Irish], the Executive Director of The Cultural Conservancy, where we gained valuable insights: 1️⃣ Meaningful Collaboration: True partnership goes beyond token consultation. It means involving Indigenous voices from the start of any project and throughout the process. 2️⃣ Traditional Ecological Knowledge: Indigenous communities hold generations of expertise about local ecosystems. This knowledge is crucial for developing effective climate resilience strategies. 3️⃣ Capacity Challenges: Many Indigenous groups face overwhelming requests for input. We need to find ways to engage that respect their time and resources. 4️⃣ Long-term Commitment: Building trust and effective partnerships requires sustained engagement, not just one-off consultations. As we face pressing environmental challenges in the Bay Area, from sea-level rise to increased fire risk, these insights are more relevant than ever. At Greenbelt Alliance, we're committed to fostering genuine collaborations that respect and integrate Indigenous perspectives in our climate adaptation work. Moving forward, it's clear that addressing our shared environmental challenges will require the collective wisdom, experience, and effort of all communities. By working together and valuing diverse knowledge systems, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for the Bay Area. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #ClimateResilience #BayArea #Collaboration #RisingTogether
