𝗡𝗬𝗖 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🏙️ 🌱 🌎 Last week, I had the opportunity to attend #NYCClimateWeek and engage in panels focused on #sustainability and #sport. The "Major League Greening" panel, organized by the Green Sports Alliance, was especially illuminating, with sustainability leaders from #NHL, #NBA/ #WNBA, #MLB, #NASCAR, and Futerra sharing insights into their respective efforts. Here are my key takeaways: 𝟭. 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗲𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Every major sport league is doing something, but what stood out is the variety in their approaches. The variety of initiatives—rooted in each league’s unique expertise—was encouraging. However, while leagues focus on reducing their own environmental footprint, it’s clear we need to assess the effectiveness of these projects, both in terms of emissions and fan engagement. 𝟮. 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. Sport has the potential to spark real awareness and change. As the panelists pointed out, more people follow sport than science, making it a powerful platform for driving environmental action. However, with the largest emissions tied to fan travel (scope 3), it’s crucial that we find ways to tap into sport's sphere of influence and craft compelling stories around sustainability. This storytelling must focus on hope and opportunity, with the right partnerships to bring the vision to life. 𝟯. 𝗡𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲. It became clear that sport leagues face the complex task of balancing the varying capabilities and sustainability journeys of their teams. This is something I've seen firsthand in my work with Euroleague Basketball. Knowledge-sharing between leagues in the U.S. seems to be one way to overcome this, but there's more work to be done. As a sport sustainability researcher and consultant, I’m excited to contribute to this growing movement and explore collaborations. Thank you to Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management for providing me the opportunity to attend this event. 🤝 Let’s work together to build more sustainable futures for sport at all levels. #greensport #SportSustainability #ClimateAction #SportForChange #Leadership

Green Sports Day Canada is right around the corner on October 6th! This year, the coalition came up with the brilliant idea to extend into a week-long celebration full of inspiring webinars from Tuesday (October 1st) to Friday (October 4th). This event is set to be our most impactful to date and we certainly have to extend a big shootout to all coalition members, precious collaborators, partners, Canadian sports and sustainability industry leaders! The conversations and the collaborations are as strong as I've ever seen before and that goes to all the key people (an many more) that I've highlighted below! The various panels will delve into key topics such as sustainable sponsorship in Canadian sports, collaborative efforts to meet climate challenges, and innovations for reducing the environmental footprint of major events. 🌎 https://lnkd.in/ehDD-cGv To Register / Pour s'inscire! 🌍🏑 Kicking off Green Sports Day at the end of this week, we wanted to highlight the International Hockey Federation (FIH). The FIH has solidified its position as a sustainability leader in global sports by winning the prestigious 2024 IOC Climate Action Award this week at Climate Week in NYC. Under the leadership of President Tayyab Ikram, the FIH has championed initiatives like reducing water consumption on elite hockey pitches and launching eco-friendly innovations such as 'Dry Turf.' As Ikram reflected, “We must act today to secure a greener, healthier planet for future generations.” With exciting new projects set to be unveiled at the upcoming FIH Centenary Congress, the Federation is committed to pushing the boundaries of sustainability in sports. #Sustainability #ClimateAction #GreenSports #Hockey #ClimateAction #greensportsday https://lnkd.in/dqMhzYPr
