Bold. Grand. Inspired.
About us
Grand St. Settlement connects New Yorkers with opportunities that inspire, services that keep families strong and programs that bring communities closer. We've been inviting New Yorkers to join us in building the communities we need for a century; when we opened our doors in 1916 we served the Lower East Side, but today we connect more than 10,000 New Yorkers on both sides of the Williamsburg Bridge, including Williamsburg, Bushwick, East New York, Brownsville, and Bed-Stuy. Our Community Centers, partner schools and Child & Family Centers are vibrant, safe, and inclusive, creating a home away from home that reflects the cultures and wisdom of the communities' diverse experiences.

"The nonprofit child care sector is a cornerstone of community support that enables parents, especially mothers, to work, study, and contribute to the economy. It enlists thousands of employees in working class communities where our neighbors cannot afford to lose jobs." Take a moment to read CEO Robert Cordero's opinion piece in City Limits detailing this critical moment for New York City's child care sector as resignations and changes in our City government continue.
A Call to Action for NYC Preschooler Parents and Child Care Providers! We already experienced a retrenchment of the city’s commitment to Universal Pre-K and Universal 3K programs. Parents can’t afford to lose more ground. The recent federal indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams has created unprecedented uncertainty that will have ripple effects beyond the immediate political arena. In these critical times, our child care system is at stake—an essential lifeline for families across the city. Check out my opinion piece in City Limits to explore what’s truly at risk and how we can rally together to support one of New York City’s most vital services for families: Child Care. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/e2WcN9AY Grand Street Settlement stands with New Yorkers United for Child Care, DAY CARE COUNCIL OF NEW YORK INC, Human Services Council of New York, United Neighborhood Houses and parents of preschoolers to prioritize child care for New Yorkers! #UniversalPreK #NYCParents #SupportOurKids #ChildCareCrisis

With the last days of #HispanicHeritage month approaching, we're excited to have one more opportunity to shout out our Nuyorican in Chief Robert Cordero who was listed in PoliticsNY's Latino Power Players list alongside dozens of innovative leaders throughout the public and private sector including fellow Settlement House CEO David Garza of Henry Street Settlement! Check out the article to hear from Robert about advice from his younger self, how his heritage has shaped his life, and the work we're doing at Grand St. Settlement. https://lnkd.in/etaab5M4

Two years ago, CEO Robert Cordero faced a medical emergency that nearly took his life. Tim Murphy of NYN Media sat down with him to hear how the biggest challenge of Robert’s life affected him, Grand St. Settlement, and how his new perspective is shaping the work we do supporting our neighbors. Shout outs to fellow Settlement House colleagues Maria Lizardo and David Garza for inspiration, Board President Bryan Koplin and Board Chair Ralph Rose for your leadership, and COO Willing Irene Chin-Ma for taking the reigns during Robert’s leave and continuing Grand Street’s mission. Celebrate #HispanicHeritageMonth by learning about one of New York City’s most impactful Puerto Rican executives!

What were you spending your time on as a teenager? Participants at the Best Buy Teen Tech Center spent much of the last year building and perfecting the Essex Claw, a robotic arm that was highlighted by Best Buy at their national Teen Summit. Not only did the members of the Teen Tech Center build, wire, and program the claw, but they created nearly every piece using 3D printers onsite. Check out the full process!

Today, we celebrated the launch of our children's book, My First Day The Grand Street Way, with our participants at Grand Street! CEO Robert Cordero led storytime, discussing the themes of starting school. Kids enjoyed arts and crafts with illustrator Carla Torres and danced to tunes from Musiquita, enhancing their experience. This book is an invaluable resource for parents and children to navigate transitions together. If you're in education or own a children's store and want to stock this book, email us at [email protected] to explore partnership opportunities!

A new school can feel scary when you are dropped off all alone! Our child care experts know just how hard the transition into a new school can be. Today Grand Street is launching our very first children's book, My First Day The Grand Street Way, aimed at making that transition just a little bit easier! Illustrated by local artist Carla Torres and created with help from the best 4-year-old focus group in New York City, My First Day The Grand Street Way shows children what to expect on the first day of preschool and provides insightful activities and guides for parents navigating this transition alongside their little ones. And a special thanks to Rebecca A. Palacios, Ph.D., NBCT for sharing her insights, expertise, and a beautifully written foreward. Copies are available at the Tenement Museum gift shop with more shopping options locally and online coming soon! Want to stock our book at your store? Email [email protected] for wholesale information.
