Making food healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable for all.

About us

The Los Angeles Food Policy Council is a collective impact initiative working to make food healthy, affordable, fair and sustainable. We bring together leaders and experts from across sectors, geographies, and socio-economic communities to strengthen connections throughout the food system, and to facilitate and coordinate systemic change. Through policy creation and cooperative relationships, our goals are to reduce hunger, improve public health, increase equity in our communities, create good jobs, stimulate local economic activity, and foster environmental stewardship. In particular, the LAFPC aims to connect environmental sustainability and local agriculture with efforts to expand access to healthy food in underserved communities.

Earlier this week Kara Still and I had the opportunity to stop by Spectrum News 1 and tell Kelvin Washington all about Prosperity Market and our upcoming Pop-up Farmers Market & Block Party at Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen on Sep 1st! And of course we brought vendors. Chef Brandi Biggles of Chits & Biggles & Michelle R. Johnson of Ghost Town Oats joined us to give a tease of what they will have at the market. This is a special market because it is the grand finale of our 4th Annual Black Business Scavenger Hunt! For the entire month of August players visited 100+ participating businesses across LA, and the winners will get their prizes on 9/1. Consider this your personal invite! We hope to see you there! • "Grocery prices skyrocketed during the pandemic, due in large part to higher costs and supply chain disruptions. We also know that, in the years since, costs have fallen and supply chains have improved. But many items are still too costly, and many large grocery chains are still raking in enormous profits. The FTC is determined to understand why. To make sure we do so, I will be asking the Commission to join me in launching an inquiry into grocery prices, to shed light on why it is that prices and profits remain high even as they appear to have come down. We want to make sure that major businesses are not exploiting their power to inflate prices for American families at the grocery store."

We've all noticed how that grocery bill has grown in the last few years. Now, the FTC and the DOJ have taken notice. On August 1, the agencies launched a Strike Force on Unfair and Illegal Pricing that will tackle, among other concerns, the rising costs of groceries. The remarks by Chair Lina Khan note, "Grocery prices skyrocketed during the pandemic, due in large part to higher costs and supply chain disruptions. We also know that, in the years since, costs have fallen and supply chains have improved. But many items are still too costly, and many large grocery chains are still raking in enormous profits. • Support for Farmers Market Operators!

One way USDA supports local and regional food system development is through the Farmers Market Promotion Program (FMPP). This grant program has funded projects that provide new market opportunities to farmers, increase access to local foods in underserved areas, support culturally relevant or niche products, and build more equitable markets for small, beginning and socially disadvantaged farmers. These investments not only aid farmers in reaching a broader customer base but also promote economic growth in rural areas. Additionally, FMPP supports infrastructure improvements, marketing efforts, and technical assistance, all of which enhance the viability and sustainability of farmers’ markets, fostering a more resilient and equitable food system. #NationalFarmersMarketWeek #AMSinAction
