What I'm reading: "The Cult of Creativity: A Surprisingly Recent History" by Samuel W. Franklin. Talk about having the zeitgeist exposed! What you think you know about "creativity" is actually a 20th C. construct defined by the US Military, marketing execs, and psychologists, in order to fulfill a capitalist agenda of finding the next brilliant workers leading up to the Cold War. You know who their definition of creativity excluded? Most of us. I've suspected for the last 15 years that our cultural understanding of what it means to be creative has been woefully narrow and harmfully exclusive. Franklin's research (and beautiful storytelling, by the way) have made me feel 🤯 in the best possible way. This book reinforces my conviction that we are all creative, albeit in different ways from each other. We may not all be ARTISTIC, which is one expression of creativity, but we all have our talents in solving complex problems, bringing ideas into existence, and relating to others. Growing your creative thinking capacity is not only possible, but easier than you think, and it's invigorating. When you are able to identify as creative, challenges become opportunities to flex your skills, to challenge yourself, to be curious and resourceful. Another happy side-effect of growing your creative thinking capacity is that you inherently grow your emotional intelligence in the process. You know yourself better, and by extension, your ability to appreciate the unique thinking styles of those around you. I'm taking my time with "The Cult of Creativity" so I can digest each insight, paragraph to page. My reading list has grown because of the many many references, and I can't wait to share the benefit of these insights with my clients.
