Like you, we read the headlines coming in about hikers dying while out on the trail. Do you ever wonder what exactly happened? It’s likely not what you think. The Hiking Guy (aka Cris Hazzard) runs through the many risks and common causes of death on the trail, as well as the sensational things we fear, but have less reason to worry about. Statistically, the likelihood of dying from a large animal attack is less than your odds of winning the powerball, dying from a dog attack, or a car crash. The real risks that we should be concerned about are often the ones we don’t think about as much, such as extreme heat, cold, and high altitude. It usually comes down to being prepared, knowing what you’re about to walk into, and working within your own limits.
